The BMW iX3 is affordably priced, attractive and efficient

Murali Naidu

While the BMW iX3 may appear familiar, it conceals its innovation well.

At the front, it retains the iconic BMW grille, but this is a clever disguise since it no longer needs to cool an engine. Instead, it's sealed to reduce aerodynamic drag and enhance the car's range. The grille features slimmer headlights, twin-power domes on the bonnet, and restyled tail light clusters.

Distinctive 20-inch M aerodynamic alloy wheels exclusive to the BMW iX3 also contribute to its efficiency. Their intricately sculpted design streamlines airflow along the car's sides, ultimately extending its range.

Throughout the iX3, you'll find various blue accents that signify its electric nature. These accents are prominently featured on the rear bumper. Blue highlights adorn the grille, badges, and sills, completing the stylish modifications.

The electric iX3 is 175kg heavier, 8mm lower, and cargo space is slightly smaller by 40 litres smaller than standard models. Boot space is 510-litre, and with all the rear seats folded down, it yields 1,560 litres. The wheelbase offers the exact dimensions as before in the X3, measuring 2,864mm.

One can opt for the M Sport trim, catering to fellow M enthusiasts. Ample amenities are standard: a panoramic glass roof, an automatic tailgate, adaptive suspension, electrically heated adjustable seats offered in black Vernasca leather, and a sporty M steering wheel-wrapped leather.

LED adaptive headlights are also thrown into the mix, followed by parking assistance with a camera. A head-up display, Navigation, climate control, cruise control, keyless start and three-zone automatic climate control, Bluetooth connectivity, Apple Car Play and Android Auto compatibility and a Harman Kardon Surround Sound System as an optional extra.

The single electric motor produces 210kW and 400Nm of torque to the rear axle, offering a quick acceleration of 0-100km/h in 6.8 seconds. BMW claims a 460km range on a full charge.

Regarding ride quality, it's smooth and has an excellent grip on the road. Inside the cabin, it's well-insulated. One has three driving modes: Comfort, Sport, and Eco Pro.

It comes with stability control and offers efficient driving and energy recovery systems that help extend the range.

Charging the 80kWh battery takes about six hours on an AC charger and two to three hours on a DC.

The iX3 is priced at R1,306,000, making the price tag much more palatable than its rivals, such as the Mercedes-Benz EQC (R1,679,000), Jaguar i-Pace EV 400 (R2,074,000) and the Mercedes-Benz EQC (R1,679,000).

Overall, the BMW iX3 M Sport offers an alluring package with its style, handling, efficiency, and competitive pricing, making this Electric SUV a sweet choice.

Cost of Ownership: Warranty - Two years/unlimited km vehicle; eight years/100,000km battery. Maintenance plan - Five years/100,000km. Price - R1,306,400.
