The Mercedes-AMG GLA45's firecracker of an engine and go kart-like handling will make you fall in love with driving again.

Few cars can cover ground as quickly as this AMG – you can thank the 4MATIC all-wheel drive system for the GLA45’s ability to tackle all weather. Thanks to its AMG-tuned 4MATIC system, it has the ability to show a Ford Focus RS or Honda Civic Type R a clean pair of heels – at least in a race for straight-line supremacy.

Powering the GLA45 is the same hand-built 280kw/475nm 2.0-litre turbocharged 4-cylinder motor that resides in the A45 and CLA45, and is capable of running from 0-100kph in just 4.4 seconds. Granted, it does feel slightly less focused and not as sharp as the A45 – it’s 40mm higher and 30kg heavier than the hot hatch – but its tendency for lift off oversteer does give it some much needed character.

It’s also slightly more practical than its A45 sibling, giving it a more grown-up feel. It is a supremely quick crossover-based hot hatch offering tremendous all-weather usability, but is sadly let down by its high price and a dated interior.

Mercedes-Benz South Africa has the GLA45 priced from R862 628.

Q: Is the Mercedes-AMG GLA45 worth buying?

Q: How fast is the Mercedes-AMG GLA45?

Q: What are the best alternatives to the Mercedes-AMG GLA45?

The best alternatives to the GLA45 include the Mercedes-AMG A45 for a sharper driving experience or consider the Ford Focus RS and Honda Civic Type R which offer similar thrills for less money.

Q: Is the Mercedes-AMG GLA45 reliable?

The GLA45's hand-built AMG engine is generally reliable when properly maintained, but as with all high-performance turbocharged engines, expect higher service costs and premium fuel requirements to keep that 280kW motor happy.

Should You Buy It?

The Mercedes-AMG GLA45 at R862,628 is a brilliant but expensive way to get your kicks. If you need a practical crossover that can embarrass supercars at the traffic lights while carrying your weekly shopping, this is your weapon of choice. The 280kW hand-built engine and 4.4-second 0-100kph sprint make it devastatingly quick, especially in all weather conditions thanks to the 4MATIC system. However, that price tag is steep for what you get, and the dated interior feels cheap compared to newer rivals. Buy it if you want the ultimate crossover sleeper and money isn't your biggest concern, but consider the A45 if you can live without the extra ride height and want better value for your performance rand.
