Mercedes-AMG Reveals the SL 63 S E

Mercedes-AMG has unveiled the pinnacle of the SL series, introducing the new SL 63 S E PERFORMANCE. This high-performance model boasts impressive figures, with a 4.0-litre V8 bi-turbo engine and an AMG Electric Drive Unit working harmoniously to deliver a remarkable system output of 600 kW (816 hp) and a maximum system torque of up to 1,420 Nm. This makes the new SL 63 S E PERFORMANCE the most potent SL variant, representing the fifth series to incorporate AMG's E PERFORMANCE hybrid technology.

The instant response of the electric drive system, rapid torque build-up, and linear power delivery offer an exhilarating driving experience. This model exudes confidence on the road, accelerating from 0 to 100 km/h in a mere 2.9 seconds and reaching a top speed of 317 km/h. Including advanced systems like the AMG ACTIVE RIDE CONTROL suspension with active roll stabilisation and rear-axle steering provides a harmonious blend of comfort and dynamic handling.

"The SL has always been an iconic presence in the Mercedes-Benz line-up. The latest iteration of this legendary roadster carries this legacy forward, with the new SL 63 S E PERFORMANCE leading the charge as the most powerful member of the SL family. This unique concept delivers outstanding performance and offers the option of all-electric driving. With a wide range of equipment options and premium materials, the SL stands as one of the most exclusive roadsters available – a true dream car," said Michael Schiebe, CEO of Mercedes-AMG GmbH and Head of Mercedes-Benz G-Class & Mercedes Maybach divisions.

In the SL 63 S E PERFORMANCE, the combination of the AMG 4.0-litre V8 bi-turbo engine on the front axle and an electric drive unit on the rear axle is a standout feature. This setup includes a 150 kW (204 hp) synchronous electric motor with a two-speed transmission and a mechanical rear-axle limited-slip differential. The lightweight, high-performance battery is strategically positioned above the rear axle, resulting in numerous advantages. The electric motor directly powers the rear axle, providing an additional boost during acceleration and overtaking. As traction decreases at the rear axle, the electric motor's power can be sent to the front wheels as needed, thanks to the fully variable AMG Performance 4MATIC+ all-wheel drive system.

The development of the high-performance lithium-ion battery draws inspiration from technologies employed in Formula 1™ hybrid racing cars by the Mercedes-AMG Petronas F1 Team. The AMG High-Performance battery offers impressive performance, rapid energy consumption, and high power density, with a capacity of 6.1 kWh, 70 kW continuous power, and 150 kW peak power. Charging is facilitated through a 3.7 kW on-board charger, ensuring fast power delivery and consumption. While its primary focus is on performance, the battery provides a practical electric driving range of 13 km (EAER), making it suitable for daily use.

Direct cooling is employed to maintain optimal battery performance. A high-tech coolant circulates all 560 battery cells, ensuring precise temperature control. This temperature control maximises power output, lifespan, and safety.

The hybrid power pack's operational strategy draws from the Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula 1 racing car, ensuring maximum propulsion when needed, especially during cornering and overtaking. Eight AMG DYNAMIC SELECT driving programs offer a wide range of driving experiences, from efficient to dynamic, adjusting parameters such as drive response, transmission, steering, chassis damping, and sound.

The SL 63 S E PERFORMANCE also features an "Electric" driving mode, allowing silent, electric-only operation. The intuitive MBUX multimedia system provides access to various displays and functions related to AMG and hybrid technology, enhancing the overall driving experience.

Active aerodynamics plays a crucial role in optimising performance. The active aerodynamic element beneath the engine contributes to balanced handling by reducing lift on the front axle. An extendable rear spoiler integrated into the boot lid adjusts its position based on driving conditions, enhancing driving stability and minimising air resistance.

Standard features include the AMG ACTIVE RIDE CONTROL suspension with semi-active roll stabilisation and active rear-axle steering, providing agility and stability. Additionally, dynamic rear-axle steering significantly improves vehicle control and reduces steering effort, enhancing the driving experience.

The SL 63 S E PERFORMANCE is equipped with a standard AMG ceramic high-performance composite brake system, ensuring short braking distances, stability, and fading resistance even under heavy use. This braking system's lightweight construction contributes to weight reduction and improved handling.

Regarding aesthetics, the SL 63 S E PERFORMANCE boasts an integrated plug-in loading flap, a highlighted model name, and distinctive twin tailpipe trims. The "E PERFORMANCE" fender badge signifies its exclusive hybrid drive. Various exterior and interior customisation options are available, including the MANUFAKTUR program, which offers multiple seat covers and finishes to cater to a wide range of preferences.

Inside, the cockpit design prioritises the driver's focus, with the portrait-format central display and electrically adjustable AMG sports seats ensuring a comfortable yet sporty driving experience. Additional options include AMG performance seats with integrated headrests, ventilation, and massage functionality.

With electrifying performance and luxurious comfort, the Mercedes-AMG SL 63 S E PERFORMANCE is set to redefine the roadster segment.
