German mega-tuner Brabus wants you to know, that even if you aren’t driving the uber powerful Mercedes-AMG G63, they have a performance solution in place for lesser models.

They recently showcased their magic on the latest-generation Mercedes-Benz G-Class, in the process gifting the G500 with an additional 58kw and 100nm, taking output to 368kw and 710nm – as much power as the old Mercedes-Benz G55 AMG. And thanks to the Brabus B40 - 500 PowerXtra performance upgrade – essentially a plug and play control module - the 4.0-litre V8-engined G500 equipped with the nine-speed automatic transmission, and now fitted with aluminium Brabus paddle shifters can now sprint from 0-100kph in just 5.7 seconds and onto an electronically limited top speed of 210kph.

The boxy luxury SUV rides on 23-inch 'Platinum Edition' Monoblock forged wheels shod with 305/35 R23 high-performance rubber, and features other notable exterior upgrades including a new front bumper incorporating LEDs into the lower valance, roof mounted LEDs, a new grille, a raised vented hood, and a more pronounced rear spoiler to name a few.

On the inside, the Brabus enhanced G-Wagon gets a range of exclusive interior options, offering aluminium pedals and scuff plates with backlit Brabus logos for the passenger cabin and the trunk. Moreover, the upholstery gets the Brabus fine leather interiors from especially soft and breathable Mastik leather and Alcantara, which are tailored-made for the customer. A variety of precious wood and carbon-fibre trim is also offered.

Mercedes-Benz South Africa plans to launch the W464 Gelandewagen locally before the end of 2018.

FAQ

Q: What does the Brabus G500 cost in South Africa?

The Brabus G500 isn't officially sold in SA, but expect to pay north of R3.5 million for a standard G500 plus another R800,000 to R1.2 million for the full Brabus treatment including the PowerXtra upgrade, wheels, and bodykit.

Q: How much power does the Brabus G500 have compared to a standard G500?

The Brabus G500 pumps out 368kW and 710Nm thanks to the B40-500 PowerXtra upgrade, which is 58kW and 100Nm more than the standard G500's 310kW and 610Nm output.

Q: Is the Brabus G500 faster than the AMG G63?

No, the Brabus G500 does 0-100kph in 5.7 seconds while the AMG G63 manages it in around 4.5 seconds, plus the G63 has more power at 430kW versus the Brabus G500's 368kW.

Q: What's the top speed of the Brabus G500?

The Brabus G500 hits an electronically limited top speed of 210kph, which is the same as most other high-performance G-Wagons due to electronic limiting.

Q: Can you buy Brabus parts for the G-Class in South Africa?

Yes, you can order Brabus upgrades through select Mercedes-Benz dealers in SA, though expect long wait times and serious money for genuine Brabus components and installation.

Should You Buy It?

The Brabus G500 is brilliant if you've got R4.5 million burning a hole in your pocket and want G-Wagon exclusivity without full G63 money. At 368kW, it's properly quick and looks absolutely mental with those 23-inch wheels and aggressive bodywork. However, for the same cash you could buy a standard G63 which is faster, has better resale value, and won't leave you explaining to your insurance company what a "PowerXtra module" is. Unless you absolutely must have that Brabus badge and custom leather, save yourself R1.5 million and buy the G63 instead. The Brabus G500 is a maybe buy for show-offs with deep pockets, but a definite no for anyone wanting the best value high-performance G-Wagon in South Africa.
