BMW iX will be the start of the new era

The BMW iX will mark a new era for the German brand. The iX is futuristic in every element of design, will be fully electric, and will completely redefine the concept of the BMW Sports Activity Vehicle (SAV). The BMW iX is one of the first models to fully embody the future-orientated generation of automobiles, creating a driving experience that is most likely to be something you have never experienced before.

In terms of exterior design, the iX will become the face for the new generation of BMW. The vehicle's design language is something that has yet to be seen. Its modern, minimalistic and will adopt an iconic monolithic shape. The iX will surely be on the forefront in the race to build more stylish electric vehicles.

The cabin of the iX is high-tech and gives this vehicle a remarkably modern look and feel. Every element of the interior will exude elegance. The inside comes featured with trailblazing Shy Tech features, and when paired with its panoramic glass roof, it creates a sense of comfort and space. BMW confirmed the highest quality materials would be used throughout the interior design.

Creating an SUV like no other was on top of the list, but BMW has gone the extra mile to ensure a driving experience like no other. The iX will come with an enhanced BMW iDrive, in which one can immerse themselves in, creating a one-of-a-kind digital experience. The iX will come with all the necessities needed to support BMW's driver-oriented design. It will use a combination of innovative sensors and artificial intelligence to create a more personal interaction between the driver and the vehicle.

In terms of power, the iX will come with two electric motors, BMW's fifth-generation eDrive technology will include a high-voltage storage system, power electronics, and charging technology. The two electric motors come combined with an electric all-wheel drive, allowing for not only efficiency but also power. The iX will deliver a power output of 370Kw and can go from 0 to 100 km/h in under five seconds. Concerning charging systems, solutions to charge at home or public will be available on the iX. BMW has said that there will be more than 55 public charging stations across South Africa. The iX will charge and give you a 120km range in just ten minutes. Customers will be able to charge the BMW iX with their BMW Wallbox, and in less than eleven hours, it will reach up to 100% in battery compacity. Customers will access public charging stations via their BMW Charging Card or the ChargePocket Webapp.

The BMW iX will hopefully arrive in 2022, with pricing still to be confirmed.

The BMW iX xDrive40 delivers 240kW and up to 425km of range, while the xDrive50 pumps out 385kW with a range of up to 630km, giving you plenty of grunt and distance for South African road trips.

Should You Buy It?

The BMW iX is a brilliant piece of engineering that genuinely feels like driving into the future, but at prices starting from R1,899,000, it's only for those with deep pockets who want to be early adopters of BMW's electric revolution. If you're looking for the best electric luxury SUV under R2,000,000 in SA, the base iX xDrive40 is your only option in this price bracket and it delivers impressive range and performance. However, if budget is a concern, you might want to wait a year or two for prices to settle or consider the upcoming iX1 for a more affordable entry into BMW's electric future. Buy it if you love being first to market with the latest tech, skip it if you prefer proven, value-focused alternatives.
