Is the Volkswagen Tiguan all the VW you need?

The Volkswagen Tiguan has, since its introduction, been a star performer for the German automaker. It offers compact dimensions yet remains practical, has a good variety of engines and gadgets and all importantly, it has a VW badge on the front. The latest, facelift model builds on the success of the previous Tiguan but what exactly has been changed? We got behind the wheel to find out.

The updated Tiguan is a real head-turner of note! It now features updated headlights and on this test unit, were the optional IQ LED Matrix options which offer impeccable illumination in the dark. There are also updated LED tail lights which also add to the visual appearance of the Tiguan and of course updated bumpers. Seen here is the R-Line model which features sporty bumpers, larger wheels and an overall visually appealing design that impressed the Auto Advisor team every time we glanced over at the car.

The interior is also as visually appealing as the exterior. It is neat and clutter-free which is just how we like it.  The team particularly liked the high-quality digital instrument cluster, large touchscreen infotainment system, which is Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatible. New on this facelift model is the fact that the toggles for the climate control console are now touch-sensitive, as are the buttons on the new steering wheel. This does take some getting used to but once familiar they are easy to use and convenient.

Adding to the convenient aspects of the car is of course its practicality. The Tiguan offers a claimed load-bay capacity of 520 litres, with the rear seats folded down, it offers 1 655 litres of utility space. This will keep the better half more than happy for those payday shopping trips and long road trips over the holiday season.

The new Volkswagen Tiguan is a car that ticks many boxes, unfortunately, when it comes to its engine, VW has decided to drop the diesel option and instead has made available a 1.4-litre turbo petrol and a 2.0-litre. Seen here is the latter 2.0-litre turbo petrol derivative, which offers peak outputs of 162kW and 350Nm of torque. It’s equipped with 4Motion all-wheel-drive which is exclusively available on this model. Add to that the 7-speed DSG gearbox and you have what sounds to be a very potent recipe.

It will hit 100km/h from a standstill in around 6.5 seconds; it even offers that much loved Vrrpah that the GTI offers. This Tiguan is also equally as good to drive as a GTI thanks to the added benefit of the 4Motion all-wheel-drive system which provides extra grip, both on the road and off of it.  There is a rotary dial on the center console which lets you select between different driving modes, these include gravel modes as well.

Living with the Tiguan for a while once again reaffirmed just how good it is. Would we prefer a diesel, yes. Unfortunately, there are no new diesel models on offer. This 2.0-litre however impressed us with being economical when needed.

We at Auto Advisor love the GTI however when it is time to grow up we could easily cross over into a Tiguan like this. It appeals to the petrolhead in us as well as someone with a family that needs space and something that can venture off the beaten track for those weekend adventures.

If Volkswagen announced that it was to only produce one car going forward and that car were to be the Tiguan, we would be ok with that decision.
