The Volvo S90 is a competitor to the Mercedes-Benz E Class and the BMW 5 Series, both of which are firm favorites in South Africa. With an understated approach to its styling, nothing quite matches the S90 in terms of looks. It has uncomplicated details and real presence, with absolutely effortless class.

Its low roofline and the clean execution of its sheetmetal give a very streamlined feel, and despite it seeming like a very big car, it’s basically the same length as its competition, although it is lower. It is more dramatic from the front end, where Volvo’s daytime running light design combine with the standard LED headlights and a concave grille to give it an unmistakable Volvo face; the rear is a little more plain, but equally unique.

Powering the big sedan is a 2.0 4-cylinder petrol, and although that may sound modest, it still manages an impressive output of 235kW and 400Nm. Countering that is the car’s 1800kg weight, and although it has a healthy torque figure, it’s not exactly a thrill machine.Similarly, the all wheel drive grip delivers plenty of confidence through corners, but it - together with the steering - feels too remote and artificial to really be considered exciting. This is a car that feels at its best when it’s not being pushed, and instead being asked to behave in a way that suits it’s more natural, every day drive status.

Volvo’s particular brand of luxury is something that needs to be experienced to be appreciated. The cabin wraps occupants in a cocoon of real wood and aluminium and leather; the design and space are both excellent and the touchscreen interface is the best on the market. The tablet-style screen operates flawlessly, controlling most of the cars systems. And that means almost no buttons on the centre console. The Inscription spec has an impressive set of standard bits including adaptive cruise control, navigation and electric seats.
