MK7.5 Golf

No matter how the letters ‘GTI’ have been shared and used by other manufacturers , the letters are synonymous for much of the population with only one car the Volkswagen Golf GTI, the car that needs no introduction.

When it registered to my mind that I would be having the GTI on test, I had mixed feelings on how will I say some words about this car without sounding biased.

Would this not result in a conflict of interest? Why am I saying all this you wonder? :- Well I owned preface-lift Golf GTI Seven a car that’s being replaced by this very same car I am having on test, I also daily a 2016 Volkswagen Golf GTI ClubSport.

But what is it that I’m having on test? It’s the Golf GTI Facelift some say it’s Golf 7.5, it gets more confusing that the car is available on test fleet while it have been out for a while.

Well think of it as a product revival, a reminder of why the Golf is regarded as the Benchmark in this segment, the car all the Manufactures want to topple in this segment.

What Powers this Golf GTI Facelift is the Award Winning EA888 2.0TSI Four Cylinder Volkwagen Group Engine , 169KW/350NM mated to smooth shifting , quick and well staggered 6 speed DSG Box .

Does those figures ring a bell? Well that’s the exact figures that were found in Preface-lift Golf GTI 7 Performance Pack,However now re-tweaked , the multi-link Rear and Macpherson strut front suspension drops the GTI 15mm lower compared to Standard Golf.

Except that you missing the eLSD (Electronic Limited Differential) here and the Dynamic Chassis Control that was available as Standard on the Performance Pack Golf.

The Golf GTI Facelift employs XDS ( Tranverse Differential System) which mimics the work of eLSD for better handling and corner attacking precision ,however you do get the Dynamic Chassis Control as an option on the Face-lifted Golf GTI and this test unit was fitted with that system.

But what justifies this car to be regarded as Facelift? Or how does it differ from my preface-lift GTI, well on the outside the difference is visible if you familiar and know your Golf’s.

The sheet metal remains untouched, bumpers gets tweaked , lights get full LED on headlights dynamic/ sweeping rear lights and a grille get fresh make-up, It’s the familiar GTI but looking a little leaner and sharper than before.

The twin chrome plates tailpipes on each side looks bigger as well, probably same circumference as the Golf Edition 40 Years.

Big changes have happened on the inside, Housed in the dash is a new fully touchscreen 9.2-inch Discovery Navigation Pro infotainment system which can be specced as an option. The system can be operated via gesture control however my test unit was not equipped with that luxury.

However you still get the AppConnect Android Auto which still have the Navigation that works via your smartphone and the mirror effect of your phone application,I remember this was optional on preface-lift Golf it’s now as Standard.

One of the most big upgrade is the Volkwagen 12.3inch Active Info display, which I regard as one of the coolest thing to ever happen at Volkwagen Group, this optional extra put everything into digital perspective to satisfy the driver and customizable as well.

You get heated front seats, ambient interior lighting, dual-zone climate control, Bluetooth and USB connectivity with 2 ports as well as multi-functional GTI engraved multi-functional steering wheel, with the cabin being of the good quality.

Other visible change is the leather seats that are embroidered in more of the red and redesigned door and dashboard honeycomb inserts, my test unit was as spoilt with the optional Adaptive Cruise Control with City stop/Front collision system ,which means it will apply brakes to assist you.

Also what was available is the Blind Spot assist which will alert you on the objects on your blind spot, from cars to even cyclists, observed this while cruising down in the Mother City.

Also what was equipped is rear traffic alert which see’s the cars behind as you reverse out of your drive way and can alert and actually applies brakes for you when hazard is detected ,front and rear Park distance control with the rear view camera.

There’s room in the back to seat adults comfortably, 380L Boot space ,when the seats are laid down , 1270 Litres of load space is unlocked.

The steering is lighter compared to my Clubsport , it’s directness and response can overwhelm the new drivers ,small touch and it’s already at turn, you just have to know what you are doing.

I recommend advanced Performance Driving offered by Volkswagen Academy for the new drivers, just to equip yourself and get to understand capabilities of this Performance Hatchback , the new steering rack offers handling that is poised but proportionate.

Noticed that the Face-lifted GTI is always eager to go forward on parking compared to my Golf, small touch and on accelerator” it’s always asking where are we going? I am ready “

The reward is a captivating blend of cornering grip and exit speed, a high level of composure, immaculate body control, not much understeer and plenty of feedback. You always know exactly where you are with this Golf, those are the benefits and yaw of the front whee drive.

Yes There will be hotter, faster ,quicker hatches on the market, but the Volkswagen Golf GTI continues to offer usable, accessible performance in a practical, all-rounder capable perspective, Volkswagen have been a experimenting with this GTI since 43 years ago and 45 years with the Golf, with every generation getting better and better and closer to perfection.

It’s a still a while to see the Birth of Generation 8 Golf, for now this is the Hatchback to buy for everyday family oriented usability with overall performance blended with good Suspension you can daily, fast and frugal, comfortable and competent!

Mk2 Golf GTIs have been long renowned for their sharp handling and superb agility out on the road. After all, one just needs to think back to the late 80s ‘Right Stuff’ television commercial to remind yourself that the Mk2 Golf ‘gave you wings’.

Sure, it was much bigger and heavier than the original GTI and resultantly lacked the cr...Read More
