Amarok, the Dark Label

On December 24, 2019

Maintenance Costs R 0.00 / Year

Insurance Premium Value R 0.00 / Month

Fuel Consumption 8 L/100km

A Walter Maria de Silva design , same guy who have given us the design of 2010 Touareg, the Golf in 2008, the Scirroco in 2008, the Polo in 2009, Lamborghini Miura concept in 2006 ,Lamborghini Egoista in 2013, Audi A3 in 2003, Audi R8 in 2006.

Audi A5 in 2007, Audi TT in 2006, Audi Q7 in 2005, Seat Ibiza in 2002 and Leon in 2005 , Alfa Romeo 146, 156, 166 and 147 respectively, so the Amarok had no reason not to look good under the leadership of a designer with such mentioned credentials.

But what is it? ,Produced in the Volkswagen Group plant in General Pacheco Argentina and being one of the First German Manufactures to experiment in this competitive Bakkie,Ute, Truck and Pick-up Segment.

This is the Volkswagen Amarok in its Dark Label special trim which is based on Amarok Highline , in that unmistakable Amarok Boxy shape front lies the standard LED daylight running lights and Bi-Xenon Headlights.

You greeted with “Dark Label, decals in each side, black running boards, locally sourced MAXE matte black Amarok engraved rolling bars, 18 inch Rawson twisted alloy wheels , smoked tailgates and rear tinted windows, the Rear bumper,Door handles and Mirrors are as black as well.

On the inside you get Deep Inox interior with a black ‘Greenhouse’ headlining, “Dark Label” embroidered floor mats and Vienna leather seat covers, ample water bottle holders all around and to cater for back seating passengers.

You still get the functionality of 6.33-inch touch screen,Cruise control, Bluetooth, Apple car play android auto as standard, the Front and rear park distance control with rear camera as optional extra as well as the navigation system which is not a necessity when you can use the GPS of the smart phone.

Seats are heated at a fee and climate control dual air-conditioning as an option which I feel it could have been offered as standard , you still get the tried and tested multi-functional steering wheel wrapped in leather and unmistakable Volkswagen and Tyre pressure monitor.

The leather seats are broad, comfortable and offer adequate bolstering and support for longer journey, Amarok presents its information clearly enough, digital trip meter as well as digital speedometer in addition to the Analog interface , along with a distance-to-empty digital counter.

6 speaker audio system will happily occupy airwaves whether you playing via your phone or radio stereo as well voice commands at a touch of a button.

There’s not one but Four 12V socket outlets and one media and charging USB port, you can still use the 12V socket outlets to charge you phone provided you have the 12V Connector, however atleast 2 USB port could have been adequate and nice to have.

5254 mm long, 1954mm wide excluding mirrors, with width between wheel arches of 1,222 mm to fit a full size pallet and a maximum payload capacity of 1,041 kg and maximum towing limit of 3.2 Tons and 192mm ground clearance.

Safety systems including EDL (Electronic Differential Lock), ASR (Anti-Slip Regulation), ESP (Electronic Stabilisation Programme) with Hill Hold Assist, HVV (maximum rear axle deceleration), MSR (engine drag torque control).

EBD(Electronic Brake-force Distribution) Hill Descent Assist and off-road ABS designed to significantly shorten stopping distances on loose surfaces.

Powered by a 2.0-litre bi-turbodiesel 4 cylinder engine worth 132 kW and 420 Nm mated with an 8-speed ZF torque converter smooth shifting automatic transmission from Audi A8 however tuned for a Bakkie.

Power is dispatched to all 4 wheels via 4Motion all-wheel drive system which will Torsion Differential power 40:60 split between front and rear axle.

But how does it drive? :-The Volkswagen Amarok is impressively quiet and refined, great for urban daily commutes and school-run use ,gravel road or even open road trips that have seen me eating the twisty tarmac to the Klein Karoo.

Conquering the well known Swartberg Mountain pass built between 1881 and 1888, The Black Mountain pass as it’s called in English medium , Connecting Oudtshoorn in the south and Prince Albert in the north.

Making a stop in Heritage site Cango Caves located in Precambrian limestones at the foothills of the Swartberg range near the town of Oudtshoorn, in the Western Cape Province of South Africa.

Throughout this expedition the Amarok Dark Label didn’t feel like missing something on the road ,the engine is Punchy and capable and never runs out of puff ,on -off-road quality is superb, even though all the Amaroks doesn’t have the traditional low range transfer case like the rest of the Bakkies.

Extra ratios of the eight-speed torque-converter transmission take care of the business and I would even say the Amarok doesn’t need the low range transfer case, press the “Off-Road button” and you good to go.

The Off-road button also activates the hill Descent Control which acts as off-road cruise control .

Well-weighted, accurate steering makes the Amarok easy to drive along twisty Bitumen with impressive body roll composure on a high riding Bakkie, intimidating from the outside due to its monster size however easy to drive

Verdict:- yes Amarok range is almost a decade old and the manufacturer is reviving the brand by offering these special editions , if looks matters so much to you this is your bakkie .

You will be rewarded with SUV like driving quality on and off-road on because of that Independent suspension with double triangular wishbone spring and damper, front Multilayer rigid axle with leaf springs on the rear, front and rear stabilized.

It’s effortless off-road abilities have earned the International Van/Pick up of the year back in 2010 when it made its first debut to the Bakkie segment ,a judging panel representing 23 countries praising the Amarok for load capacity, payload, interior room, comfort, ergonomics and fuel consumption.

I have managed to see lowest fuel consumption ever in a test Bakkie, a record of 6.3Liters per 100km travelled, which is highly commendable for a Bakkie this size, great overall Bakkie as a package.
