A Great Engine For a Great Bakkie

On September 4, 2019

Maintenance Costs R 0.00 / Year

Insurance Premium Value R 0.00 / Month

Fuel Consumption 10 L/100km

Once you’re strapped in and ready to go, the 3,0-litre turbodiesel V6 engine becomes the central point of excitement. Push the right pedal down all the way and the Amarok will unleash 165kW of power and 550Nm of torque sent through an 8-speed automatic transmission to all four wheels with permanent 4MOTION. Push the gas even further and it will unlock the overboost function which increases the performance to 180kW of power and 580Nm of torque for 10-seconds. Volkswagen claims that the V6 engine will sip 9,0-litres of diesel per 100-kilometers and we came very close to this figure on multiple occasions, although we did find that consumption was heavier during shorter trips within the city. Long distances were much more efficient, and could have been even more efficient through the use of a cruise control function.

Volkswagen Amarok special edition Canyon.

On January 14, 2020

Maintenance Costs R 0.00 / Year

Fuel Consumption 12 L/100km

But what is it?:- if you remember back in 2012 just two years after Amarok was in production as one of the first German Car Manufacturers to venture in the Bakkie Segment, a Walter Maria De Silva design, Italian car designer and former head of Volkswagen Group Design.

Volkswagen presented the Amarok Canyon Concept in Geneva Motor Show ,the Bakkie designed for freestyle kayakers, with a Baladi Orange exterior with flared wheel arches and a 40mm lift kit.

It had Auxiliary lights,electrically-deployable side steps and tinted taillights, the loading bin holds two carbon fiber kayaks, a set of paddles and all the related accessories to adventure.

That was powered by 2.0-liter bi-turbo TDI engine that develops 132 kW and 400 Nm of torque, mated to 4MOTION all-wheel drive system and a locking rear differential with 8 speed ZF box, identical to the production version Highline 4Motion Amarok.

Fast forward until recently, Volkswagen put the Amarok Canyon in production, based on Amarok V6 Highline plus , and I just spent about a month of the festive season busy to daily the Canyon whether going to work or ferry family members that were visiting for holidays.

The Amarok Canyon borrows a lot in looks with the Amarok Canyon Concept I mentioned earlier ,
On exterior you will notice the unique to the Canyon paintwork Honey Orange Metallic.

There’s Canyon Black printed decals on each side, black tubular running boards / side steps, Black tubular rolling/sports bar engraved with Amarok name plating on each side.

Front and rear black wheel arches, black rear bumper and black door handles, a carry over from the V6 Amarok Highline Plus Bi-Xenon headlights with LED daytime running lights, Front and Rear park distance control, essential for a truck this size and a standard 3.5 Tons worth tow-bar.

Unique 17-inch Aragua alloy whees wrapped in Continental Cross Contact rubber, body colored electrical folding mirrors with chrome-effect strips , the Grille features black and chrome-effect trim, 4Motion decals on each side reminds you which animal you dealing with.

On the inside major differences being the Honey Orange stitched leather seats, seatbelt, on center console as well as on multifunctional steering wheel, the floor mats are Canyon word embroidered and “Greenhouse” black roof lining.

VW Group stainless steel pedals and an electro-chromatic rear-view mirror, other than that the interior is a carry over from the standard Amarok V6, with the Standard rear view Camera for the Canyon .

Out of only three options you can add, only one was added, the “winter package” that unlocks Washer fluid level indicator,
washer nozzles in front and
Seat heater for front seats, perfect for winter mornings and days.

At a fee VW can sell you the Navigation system which you don’t really need because the standard App Connect Android auto GPS does the job unless you like to travel in network limited expeditions, also the 19 inch Milford mags for sporty look which I don’t really recommended if you are going to be doing a lot of off-roading .

What powers the Canyon is that VW Group Turbocharged V6 diesel Engine found in Porsche Cayenne, Audi Q7/Q8 and in Volkswagen Touareg, however differently tuned with stronger pistons and extra oil capacity for Bakkie working conditions, the gearbox is also the 8 Speed ZF Auto box shared among VW Group Automobiles.

165KW/550NM engine with over-boost to 180KW/580NM for few seconds when on sport mode and pedal pushed much further Down and pinned to the floor , effectively for overtaking or other times when you feel the need for more power.

Yes there will be more powerful Bakkie in our market but the Amarok Canyon is still undisputed by being the most quick accelerating Bakkie in the local market with sub 8 seconds to 100km/h ,mind blowing for a truck.

But how does it drive:- V6 Canyon feels smaller and much more nimble on a tight, winding roads even though might look intimidating from the outside due to its monstrous appeal, there”s flexibility and performance superiority and a refined diesel noise grunt that offers passenger-car levels of refinement and noise control.

The amount wave of torque is felt each time an accelerator is stabbed, makes me wonder if do we really need that 190KW version Amarok in our shores like other markets while the Standard Amarok V6 is this brilliant.

The Driving Platform still provides SUV-Like platform and that’s what sets the Amarok apart from the rivalry ,it’s that good suspension set up while being able to do daily chores and expedition and work duties.

On Gravel the Amarok felt comfortable in absorbing the bumps and uneven terrain with the comfort of that off-road ABS giving assurance that the Bakkie will brake better whether on tar or gravel.

40/60 front/rear torque split on high-traction surfaces all thanks to permanent 4Motion all wheel drive and rear differential lock and hill descend assist incorporated In “off-road button” selection.

Boasting with the widest loading bin in its class I extensively used to load cargo from my garage to the storage place and helping out to move boxes and stuff to new apartment, throughout the whole process the Amarok felt always eager to help.

Verdict:- Yes the Amarok Bakkie as range is decade old and starts to show it’s age partly on the interior cabin and technology but I cannot be of a critic with regards to that as it’s also a commercial designed vehicle.

So it would be rather unfair to expect the interior feel of the Volkswagen Touareg, with all that said the Amarok Canyon offers a whole new world of performance and Family Vehicle with off-road pedigree and I don’t really see that changing anytime soon.

If you want the closest thing you can get to a sports car in a 4x4 Bakkie disguise , Amarok Canyon is a worthy buy , you will be unique and travel comfortable while fitting in the Bakkie competitive segment and smile each time you step on the gas on acceleration.
