Was chatting with a friend the other day, I asked when has it ever been a bad thing for people to quib, "it's (like) a BMW"!? With that said, I do wish this reincarnated Toyota GR Supra was more of a watered down Lexus LFA, a purer bloodline. But I guess that would still have been costly development. Right, with likenesses out of the way, let's see about "the Supra".

Just look at it! It's a major win from us. We couldnt find a bad angle, although the fake vents atop the clamshell bonnet and on the door are too easily obvious as fakes. It's a strict 2-seater now, unlike 2+2-seater Supra's of old. So the occupants sit closer to the rear axle, giving better sensations of what the back 275/35R19 wheels are doing (255/35-sections at the front). The Toyota Gazoo Racing tuners are said to have fettled with the suspension a bit, to give a Japanese feel to the handling and dynamics.

The engine and gearbox, straight from Bavaria (no 2JZ's here), the 3.0 litre straight-6 twin-scroll turbo petrol upfront sending 250kW (335hp)/500Nm to the aft axle via a slick ZF 8-speed autobox. A number of international journo's have dyno'ed their test units and found the power to be more towards the 380hp mark (seems the GR guys did some software tuning as well, to extra more juice and pip the Z4 M40i at its own game).

Inside is decidedly very german. The GR Supra gets its own (electric) bucket seats, steering wheel and instrument cluster. The roof is also fixed, as opposed to the BMW, meaning it has less body flex, which is a good thing.

On the road, the new Toyota GR Supra draws a lot of attention, gives the driver a great sense of being. It does not suffer any fools behind the steering wheel though. If you're careless with the "sport" and "traction control" buttons, you will fishtail around a tree. Better get some advance driver training to have maximum fun in the Supra. Even in "normal mode", it is light as a feather, a flex of the big-toe gets you to illegal speeds quickly, while the Supra's ride quality can numb your sense of speed and you find yourself flying past cars thinking you're at 120km/h, but you're waaaay over that speed.

In the end, it feels special. Whether it's just the name or the actual car and experience in it, that "reincarnation", that rebirth of the "soul of Supra" into a modern mould (despite German mechanicals), it lives indeed.
