The Subaru XV is arguably showcase for just how user-friendly a Subaru can be. The crossover is designed to provide quasi-SUV versatility in a package that behaves more like a regular car.

The XV has a certain sleekness that isn’t usually part of the crossover recipe. Both the front and rear very obviously share elements with the its Impreza cousin: in front, the slim grille and standard LED headlights are a highlight, but the back, the treatment has resulted in the XV looking a bit like a Nissan Qashqai clone.

Standard off raod-ready bits includes the black plastic body protection and roof rails, which give the XV an extra bit of character.

Powering the XV is a 2.0 4-cylinder petrol motor with 115kW and 196Nm, matched to a CVT gearbox. Just like the Impreza, the XV never feels like a very rapid thing, with in-gear acceleration being particularly disappointing when you need a good bit of power quickly. As long as you’re not in a hurry, the XV is easy to live with; it’s chassis is the more impressive part of the drive though.

It has a good refinement and sharp steering with good feel; and while the overall engagement level isn’t very high, it is an easy drive to live with - helped by some useful tech. Subaru’s Eye Sight system is a camera-based adaptive cruise control, which automatically keeps a set distance to the car ahead. It’s particularly handy in traffic, where it will crawl along white happily, applying the brakes when necessary and even come to a complete stop. It’ll then alert you when the car ahead pulls away, at which point you just tap the accelerator and you’re on your way again. On the highway, the lane keep assist will warn you when you drift out of your lane.

For those times when you’re out of town, the XV packs symmetrical all-wheel drive, with X-Mode. The system automatically regulates engine, braking and traction to suit conditions. In practice, it’s a seamless system that works in the background to make sure you have continued progress. And while you’re kicking up dust or flinging mud about the place, the interior of the XV will keep things civilised with quality materials, decent spec and good design.

All of those elements combine to create a great space in which to spend some time behind the wheel. The 8 inch touch screen includes sat nav as standard, as well as Apple CarPlay or Android Auto. Dual zone climate control, Bluetooth, USB, keyless operation and a reversing parking camera system all add to the sense of value in the XV.Fake carbon fibre is always a disappointing finish, and it’s no different in here - especially considering the XV is more about dirt track than race track.

Space is good, and it’ll carry a full 1200 liters with the rear seats folded down.
