The Renault Duster is arguably the most SUV-looking thing in its class, doing away with any sort of fashion sensibilities, and instead looking quite utilitarian. Big grille, big headlights, lots of strong lines and details; even thought it’s not likely to encounter much in the way of off road adventure, the Duster at least is trying its hardest to look the part, and that does give it a certain charm.

A large contributor to the Duster’s sales success is its interior, which isn’t particularly fantastic to look at, but offers the kind of spec that makes it really good value: cruise control, Bluetooth, USB, electric windows all round, electric mirrors and rear park distance control are all part of the standard spec, while the Dynamique spec also includes Renault’s Media Nav system. This adds a reversing camera and satellite navigation to the setup.

The 1500 4-cylinder turbo diesel in the Duster is more about utility than sport, and puts out 80kW and 250Nm, which is adequate rather than impressive. Power delivery is decent enough, although it’s typically diesel in that it’ll get off the line ok, but then run out of puff once it’s past its relatively narrow power band.

The dual-clutch gearbox offers smooth shifts and decent ratios, all managed by software that eliminates the need to reach down and use it is manual mode. It’s not a perfect experience though - lower down the rev range, there is a perceptible vibration that can be unsettling, but is apparently a normal part of the Duster’s setup.

Fuel consumption is impressive though - not quite at Renault’s 4.8 liters per hundred kays level, but it’s easy to manage a figure under 7.
