The Range Rover Velar is the middle child of the brand’s lineup, sitting between the Sport and the Evoque, and shares a platform with the Jaguar F Pace - a car that has a reputation as being a thoroughly good drive.

Looking like the skinniest member of the family, its front end in particular is similar to the Sport, but with even slimmer headlights and grille. At the back, an all-new tail light design gives the Velar a touch of individuality, but the rest of the packaging is still very obviously Range Rover.

The Velar’s designers went on a diet for this one, cutting out unnecessary details - the metal is clean, the lines are sharp and it’s a very pleasant thing to look. That minimalism has also taken over the interior design - but without diluting a very deep sense of space, quality and luxury. The centre stack dominates with its collection of dual touch screens that now control almost every single feature of the interior, and it’s a brilliant glimpse into the future of car interfaces. Materials and layout are just as impressive; a collection of leather, gloss plastic and aluminium that sculpt out a space that has luxury as its primary focus. There’s a good sense of space, and inkeeping with its SUV status, it has a good sized boot that packs a full sized spare as well.

The 3.0 Supercharged Velar puts out 280kW and 450Nm, which feel strong off the line; the 8-speed auto gearbox though isn’t quite as good. For all the engine’s enthusiasm, putting your foot down for a burst of power when overtaking, or just because the road demands it, will more often than have the gearbox taking its time selecting a gear the right cog; using the shift paddles doesn’t solve the problem either. It’s not catastrophic by any means, but at this level, and with the advances in auto gearbox technology, it’s not something that should be part of the experience. The drive is rescued to an extent by the chassis.

Riding on air suspension, the setup is refined and very well sorted, although doesn’t quite deliver the same level of involvement as an F Pace. The Velar is stable in the corners, and deals with changes in direction with little fuss - and relative ease thanks to the sharp steering. Overall it manages to handle its rather considerable weight well, even under heavy braking.

Drive is to all four wheels, and while Land Rover’s Terrain Response off-road system is part of the package, there’s no low range. As a result, Terrain Response is a slightly less advanced version that you find in the new Discovery for which you pay similar money. Land Rover are insistent that the Velar is very capable off road, although it hasn’t been created to conquer all sorts of terrain.
