Peugeot 5008 GT 1.6 THP Auto

In typical French fashion, Peugeot have created something original in a class that’s overrun by chunky, off-road focused designs. Like its smaller 3008 sibling, the 5008 is a stand-out design that projects a city slicker image with no desire to go off-road. While it features a raised ride height, roof rails and body protection, they are just additions to a beautiful design, rather than functional considerations.

The interior, too, is a unique space. A pared down approach to switchgear has left a simple row of satin chrome switches midway up the centre console, with almost everything else (dual zone climate, smartphone integration, sat nav, and car setup) being controlled by the touch screen above. In front of the driver, the i-Cockpit setup offers an ergonomic setup with full digital instrumentation. The combination of top class materials and leading edge tech is brilliantly executed, and the 5008 offers added versatility in the form of a third row of seats. Packed flat into the boot floor when not needed, a simple procedure unfolds a pair of individual seats, with relatively good space for two extra passengers. The second row of seats is fully adjustable, adding further flexibility.

The 5008 is powered but a 1.6 turbo petrol motor with 121kW and 240Nm, matched to a 6-speed auto driving the front wheels only. With a big body and most power, the 5008 isn’t the most sporty thing of the line, but there is a decent power for a fairly effortless, with extra involvement on offer via the Sport mode (which sharpens up the power delivery while simultaneously piping fake engine noise into the cabin), as well as steering-wheel mounts shift paddles.
