Nissan Micra Launch

On November 19, 2019

Maintenance Costs R 0.00 / Year

Insurance Premium Value R 0.00 / Month

Fuel Consumption 8 L/100km

I attended the launch of the updated Nissan Micra recently and I must say, Nissan has really went above and beyond on this new Micra.
So what’s new ? Well firstly, Nissan has introduced a new DIG-T (Direct Injection Gasoline-Turbo) engine which produces an impressive 84kW over the outgoing 66kW 0.9-litre engine. This new engine features a host of technical innovations which help the new Micra deliver smooth performance whilst remaining very fuel efficient. This new engine produces 180Nm of torque however there is an added 20Nm of overboost which brings up the number to 200Nm of torque. I was really impressed with the delivery of the power in the Micra. This small engine really packs a powerful punch which is perfect for zipping around town and getting up to speed when necessary. As this new engine is meant to be good on fuel, Nissan claims it will do 5.0L/100km however, in real world driving with a combination of city driving with constant stop/starts, as well as highway driving, we managed to average 8.3L/100km which isn’t the worst fuel consumption considering the various driving styles.
The Micra features a 6-speed manual gearbox which is really fun in this car. However, during the presentation we had, we were told that Nissan is testing an automatic transmission for the Micra so we should expect to see one in the near future. The steering rack has been improved and is sharper and lighter to use and I found this to be very helpful for weaving around the busy streets of Johannesburg and its CBD. This makes the car a lot more agile and fun to drive over the outgoing model. The Micra also receives a 10mm drop in suspension and a revised suspension setup which helps improve the benefits of the lower suspension. It certainly sits and looks amazing thanks to the lowered suspension. This doesn’t however take away from the comfort of the Micra. The car is very comfortable and really soaks up bumps in the road well.
Upon getting into the drivers seat of the Micra, I really fell in love with how well designed the cabin was. The cabin features soft leathers which look really amazing as well as very comfortable upholstery seats. The Micra includes many great features as standard and this makes it very competitive in this segment. Tekna and Tekna Plus models come fitted with an all new exclusive Bose Personal sound system, complete with headrest speakers. It is very hard to explain just how good this sound system is. It really is an emerssive experience. Some other tech in the Micra includes as with the previous model, Apple Carplay and Android Auto. The new Micra also comes equipped with Nissan’s patented Nissan Intelligent Mobility technology, which is a suite of advanced technology to help open the driver to new experiences and connect them to their world and those around them. I think the most impressive feature for me was the reversing camera. So upon selecting the reverse gear, a rear-camera view pops up on the infotainment screen, showing your the surroundings of the car with guidelines but also showing you a top-down view of the car. This is VERY helpful as it can help you see all around the car when reversing out of tight parking spaces. Whilst in traffic, I fiddled around with some buttons and I noticed a button named “Camera”. What this does is open a camera at the front of the and this shows you a view of what is in front of you. It also shows you when you get too close to the car ahead. The screen also shows a top-down view of the vehicle. This should making parking in town quite simple with the use of this camera aid. Well done to Nissan for that ! Also included as standard is a keyless entry system with a push start button, rear parking sensors, automatic folding exterior mirrors, moving object detection and blind spot warning. Some ways to tell the updated model from the old one are the sport suspension, and sport exhaust tail pipe finished in silver.
The updated Micra comes as standard with around R31 000 worth of extras which its direct competitor does not come standard with. This makes the Micra very competitive and makes it a really good option for someone in the market for a brand-new hatchback with loads of technology. Pricing starts at R305 900 for the Acenta Plus and goes right through to R336 900 for the Tekna Plus model. I personally think the price range is very affordable considering what you get in the car.
