Hear the Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross review on Eat Sleep Drive Repeat, the motoring podcast! Find it on your favourite podcast app.

At around R400 000, the choice of SUVs is quite vast - everything from the Mahindra XUV 500 to the Nissan Qashqai to the Honda HR-V. Rather than relying on its prestigious rally history to differentiate the Eclipse Cross from the rest, Mitsubishi has packed good styling and equally good value into it.

A slim chrome grille is matched to equally slim headlights, supported by a large chrome detail that runs down and back towards the front wheels. The rear has some interest as well. The coupé shape has dictated a hatch-style tailgate, with the rear window split into an upper and lower section. If nothing else, it does give the car a very different look from the outside.

The interior is features a long list of standard spec, the stand out bits being electric heated seats, keyless operation and head up display. The rest of the menu items include everything you need to make for a comfortable, stress-free drive including cruise control. The infotainment system is a bit of an aftermarket looking thing, but it works well enough and includes USB, Bluetooth and Apple CarPlay.

Space and versatility is good as well; the rear seats are fully adjustable, and fold completely flat for easy loading. Boot space is comparable to a Nissan Qashqai, and that’s with a full-size spare wheel.

While the styling and interior as definite highlights, the drivetrain and ride setup are more ordinary. The Eclipse Cross is powered by a 2.0 naturally aspirated petrol motor with 110kW and 198Nm, with a CVT gearbox. There is a choice of either 2- or all-wheel drive. The drive isn’t terrible, but it’s also not amazing - it does what it’s supposed to do, with no frills, but with the occasional (and unavoidable) CVT noise. Ask for a bit of power, and the engine noise climbs and then holds while the CVT maintains the most efficient number of revs. In our CVT style, once the job is done, it kinda slips back into normal operation and remains unobtrusive until you want that burst of power again. The Eclipse Cross does have a set of rally-style paddle shifters on the steering wheel for more regular-style step gear changes, which can be fun to use.

Much like the drivetrain, the ride setup is straightforward: generally comfortable with a good steering setup, the Eclipse Cross remains compliant on rougher surfaces. The drivetrain makes do with a light version of Mitsubishi’s Super Select II off-road management system, called Super All-Wheel Control. It’s not going to allow for go-anywhere capability but given the company’s off-road pedigree, should make for decent off-road handling.
