Harder top, softer ride.

The RF is a slightly different take on the Mazda MX-5 recipe that reignited the world’s passion for
2-seater sports cars. Since 1989, the MX-5 has featured a convertible fabric roof; the RF has a few
mechanical adjustments and a folding hardtop.

From a styling point of view, with difference between the two is only really noticeable with roof
down. Where the soft top is a genuine convertible, the RF is more a of targa, with the B pillars
staying in place, once its electromechanical roof folding routine is done. The open-top experience
is a little more restrained than you’d get with the regular MX-5 - and that seems to be the theme
with the RF.

Mazda has retuned the MX-5 RF’s 2.0 4-cylinder to deliver what it calls “relaxed performance”. It packs 118kW and 200Nm, with a 0-100km/h sprint time of 8.6 seconds. The power delivery is smooth with a decent exhaust noise, but it’s not what you might call enthralling. But - the MX-5 has always had its focus on handling, on the balance of the car and how it delivers genuine feel and enjoyment. While the soft top MX-5 delivers that in heaps, the RF is a little less edgy, because the suspension has also been adjusted. While that might take away some ultimate involvement, it makes the MX-5 package less skittish and more manageable. It doesn’t feel as on edge as the soft top, which then gives you the confidence to explore what it can do. In terms of handling talent, the RF is just as enjoyable - show it some corners, keep your foot in it and it’ll happily take them on without any sign of nervousness. If there’s a weak link in the setup though, it’s the gearbox. The six-speed auto has shift paddles and sport mode, but it feels less enthusiastic than the rest of the setup.

The interior of the RF is unchanged - it is a very compact space, and if you’re taller than average, be prepared to feel a little cramped. Or drive everywhere with the roof down. It’s nicely specced though, with climate control, heated seats, USB and Bluetooth, and a general sense that it’s been well bolted together. The standard safety kit include active headlights, lane departure warning and blind spot monitoring.

On the practical side - as far as a two seater sports car can be practical - the boot remains basically the same size as the other MX5, which is good enough for a couple of weekend bags.
