The Mazda 2 compact hatch is currently the cheapest Mazda on the market, and the Individual Plus spec is the most expensive version of the cheapest Mazda. From a styling point of view, this is one rare occurrence of the Mazda look not winning the day. It’s not unattractive, but it’s not nearly as standout as the CX-3 or MX-5. The junior member of the Mazda family is softer, rounder and generally less exciting compared to its siblings and its competition.

On the inside though, once you’ve sat yourself down, you’re back in top class Mazda territory. The Mazda 2 packs a lot of stuff as standard, and it’s designed brilliantly. The comprehensive spec includes Apple Carplay, sat nav, cruise control and keyless operation, all wrapped up in a mix of top materials and finishes. It’s matched to a mix of analogue and digital instrumentation, for an interior that’s very different, very well done and very much a part of the 2’s appeal.

On the move, the 2 is an easy, enjoyable drive, and seems to have been designed to make the commute as unstressful as possible. Its 1.5 4-cylinder petrol motor puts out 82kw and 145Nm; it’s a not a stellar performer, with a 0-100 is beyond 10 seconds - but that rally doesn’t matter. It’s more focused on a smooth power delivery with an easy-shifting 6-speed auto. The handling is confident, and the steering feel is just right.

For a while now, Mazda’s stated intention is to be seen as more premium, and to compete directly with the likes of Audi and BMW. As a company, it’s not quite in those upper echelons yet, but models like the Mazda 2 are definitely a step ahead of what has traditionally been its competition. It priced like a VW Polo, with a similar spec to a Ford Fiesta, but it has an interior and a general attitude that puts it in a class of its own.
