A Stint in a Limited Edition Mustang Bullitt

Maintenance Costs R 0.00 / Year

Fuel Consumption L/100km

And then there was the guest of honor, the car that pays homage to Steve McQueen’s 1968 Movie Bullitt and to celebrate Fifty year’s of that movie with classic car chase of all time ,with the Bullitt in the hills of San Francisco Intercepting Dodge Charger, Ford Southern Africa is only going to bring Fifty of these bad boys in our shores.

From the outside there’s no signatory of a Pony emblem except in headlights, there’s subtle chrome accents around a unique black honeycomb grille and side windows, nineteen inch aluminium wheels and red-painted Brembo brake calipers with Fifteen inch brake rotors.

Mustang Bullitt comes with a feature Ford calls line-lock , this works by locking the front brakes but leaving the back wheels free (you can guess what happens next). however I didn’t try this feature based on these reasons:- The MD of Ford was present, My budget was not sufficient to buy those big fat and expensive Michelin Pilot Sport Tyres and the fact that I was in a public road.

Only the circular faux gas cap Bullitt logo on the rear center is visible on the exterior, An active valve performance exhaust system as standard, with new black NitroPlate exhaust tips,
Exterior paint choices are limited to Shadow Black and classic Dark Highland Green, my weaponry was the dressed in the latter just like in the original Bullitt Movie Paintwork.

Adaptive damping as well as active exhaust system with quad pipes, Open the door and you will be greeted by bullitt engraved scuff plates,The interior technological features include’s a Twelve inch all-digital LCD instrument cluster.

Recaro Ebony Black leather-trimmed seats with unique green accent stitching, Bullitt welcome screen starts with an image of the car rather than the standard pony, there’s 1,000-watt B&O stereo even though you won’t be needing that, it’s therapeutic to listen to the rumble of the V8.

The Bullitt is equipped with a 6-speed manual transmission only, with rev matching, and the gear shifter features a white cue ball shift knob just like in the original car, car is powered by an award winning Coyote modular V8 engine with a 5.0L displacement ,an engine that has powered the Mustang GT since 2011.

The engine is able to create natural Aspirated 338KW/529NM using Twin Independent Variable Camshaft Timing and Cam torque actuation, 255/40R-19 in front and power sent to 275/40R-19 in back with sticky Michelin Pilot Sport 4S Rubber.

The engine borrows Shelby GT350 intake manifold with 87mm throttle bodies to deliver optimal performance as well as mirror bore ,spray in cylinder liners, a Torsen limited-slip differential gears, and a stiffer rear anti-roll bar.

Ford was kind enough to let me have a go in a short stint of a drive, with a mandate to drive it like its stolen however exercising caution as there’s only a handful of these and only two of them brought at launch.

Haven’t drive a stick shift ,three pedal of a car in a while and oh boy there’s drama and noise in each gear engagement, first gear ,second bam! The car just pulls with tyre squeaking aggressive manner showing its lots of power and torque being channeled to the rear!

I love that I had to roll up my sleeves and get involved in the driving and stick shift that gear lever and work the three pedals, no steering paddle shifters here!,it’s just you and the machine designed to be BadA$$ of a Pony car, I badly want one, Long Live the Noise of Natural Aspirated V8 ,in these days of WLTP times and era.

GoodLuck in securing your order and cross fingers that the fifty units are not sold out by the time you read this.

Ford Mustang Bullitt Tested.

At Revised Ford Mustang launch I had a stint in this American Hooligan, Ford South Africa decided to loan me this car for the weekend, but why only a weekend? Instead of seven days as the normal duration of Ford Fleet testing procedures.

The thing is there’s only Fifty of these bad boys in the country and there’s only one unit on Cape Town fleet, so that gives an idea on how exclusive and in demand this car is, I feel much In appreciation and lucky to having spent time with it.

But what is it? You wonder:- it’s the car paying homage to the Movie Bullitt of the Sixties staring Lieutenant Detective Frank Bullitt from San Francisco Police Department, acted by the king of cool himself, Terence Steven McQueen an American actor he was.

When mobsters kill the witness he was assigned to protect, a dedicated policeman investigates the case on his own, Lieutenant Detective Frank Bullitt, that Aprox 12 min classic car chase on the streets of San Francisco.

A Highland Green 1968 6.4-litre V8 Ford Mustang GT 390 Fastback, While driving his Ford Mustang, Bullitt becomes aware that two men are following him in a Dodge Charger.

He loses the tail and reappears behind them. Realizing they are being followed, the hitmen attempt to flee, but Bullitt gives chase.

A pursuit ensues through the streets of San Francisco and onto the highway, where one of the hitmen begins shooting at Bullitt. Bullitt manages to force the Charger off the road, where it collides with fuel storage tanks at a gas station, causing an explosion that incinerates the hitmen.

More than 50 years later Ford decided to produce a modern classic, available only in 2 color paintwork, Classic Dark Highland Green just like the original Bullitt car and Shadow Black and that’s the only choice you have.

It’s the sound of 5 litres of fuel and air being mixed, squashed and ignited to create a deep, menacing noise, Natural Aspirated Coyote V8 cacophony, you hear the Bullitt before you even see it.

On the outside you get the Pony de-badged honey comb grille with chrome strips wrapped around the grille and also on windows, the lower bumper is also Bullitt specific.

At the rear it’s the Bullitt Badge on the decklid, the aim by Ford is to make the Bullitt not to shout (Except the V8 engine ofcourse) and a be cool looker, as well as extended splitters and sills.

The Recognizable Tri-Bar Rear lights is a carry over from the Current Mustang Range As well as adaptive Full LED headlights and Daylight Running Lights with LED Foglights, there’s noisy quad pipes with noise regulating and considerate neighbor “quiet mode” starter.

The Only Pony emblem you find on the outside is on the 19 inch five-spoke Black Alloys , wrapped around Michelin Pilot Sport 4S Rubber, the Stopping is made possible by six-piston Brembo brakes.

You will also find the Pony badges engraved inside headlights with auto high beam and that’s it, oh the Bullitt will also project Pony imagery on the ground at night.

On the inside the only place you will see a Pony running west will be on the infotainment touch screen on start up, full LCD 12 inch highly customizable screen Shows instrumentation and driving profiles, can also be used to change ambient colors and it shows the image of the Bullitt car on start up than a Pony.

The digital screen also comes in handy when on track via track apps ,that can measure the acceleration, Stopping times,Line Lock sequence, and traditional information and gauges, Bullitt scuff plates, Bullitt signage on steering wheel and passenger side with individual chassis number plaque on the dash.

Standard with MagneRide adaptive suspension, which adjusts the dampers up to 1,000 times per second, a Powered Leather Recaro Sports seats, Ford SYNC3 technology Bang and Olufsen stereo with 10 speakers ,push to start button and keyless entry.

There’s Navigation system, rear view camera,2x USB ports Rear Park distance control and Apple car play android auto as well as front collision assist , Tyre Pressure monitor,Hill start assist, lane keep assistance and adaptive cruise control.

It’s 3 pedals and a 6 speed stick shift only type of engagement with customizable rev-matching , with the stick shift being White Cue ball, a salute to the original Bullitt Mustang, There’s GT350 intake manifold , larger throttle bodies, and ECU tune, as well as the visually open air filter box, Torque remains the same as a standard GT at 529NM while power is cranked up to 338KW.

In corners with the steering weighted up in Sport mode(steering can also be toggle switch adjusted to comfort, sport and normal mode) , you get a level of feedback and confidence that makes you really want to use that torque under your right foot.

The 3.73 Torsen rear limited-slip rear differential makes this car feel totally planted on twisty tarmac complemented by the K-Brace , heavy duty front springs and upsized sway bars with unique chassis tune.

Standard MagnaRide adaptive dampers gives this car an excellent ride/handling balance even though I would have loved the dampers to have comfort mode as the ride can be tad harsh under normal road cruise.

Verdict:- The Ford Mustang Bullitt is one of those cars that inspires childish giggles every single time you get behind the wheel, hard shifts will initiate Beautiful mini wheel spins in gears as those fat Michelin’s getting the grip of traction and being baptized with enormous torque.

I want it with its imperfections , it’s the one to buy now and keep for generations to come as it might be one of the last of its kind in unrestricted Natural Aspirated V8 Noise and hooliganism.

Engagement and thrill in driving comes as standard, it needs no introduction, indeed American Muscle car, discreet and cool like Steve McQueen, make sure you please get it In Dark Highland Green and thank me later.
