Wandering Around the Cape With Ford EcoSport

With underpinnings from the Ford Fiesta, in a very highly competitive segment with each manufacturer wanting their slice of the cake, Ford South Africa moved 1360 units for the month of November, 95 units more than October Month.

Families and Consumers who like to adventure without breaking their pockets are very much keen in this Cross Over market , affordability and ground clearance are the crucial factors, Ford EcoSport meet those requirements .

Ford insisted on me trying it for the weekend as I initially wanted a 1.5L TDCI as I driven this car already in 2018 , however unfortunately the diesel version was not available on local test fleet,so I had to work with what’s available.

Powered by the Peppy Multi-Award winning
92KW/170NM 1.0L turbocharged 3 cylinder EcoBoost engine mated to smooth shifting 6 speed automatic box with paddle shifters and sport mode if you may.

Ford only sells the EcoSport in Front wheel drive across the range and not with All Wheel Drive like other markets, with all that said our roads and weather don’t really need All Wheel Drive and as this car is used as city car by most consumers.


On the exterior there’s Black Grille with chrome surroundings, Headlamps incorporated with Day time running lights for better visibility as well as new Foglight’s with integrated turning signals , the Bumper is revised with new Hood and revised taillight design.

The Mirrors are electrically powered and fold when the car is locked as well as puddle lights underneath the mirrors, there’s 17 inch mags with Tyre Pressure Monitored Tyres and aluminium roof rails each side.



On the interior theres that tried and tested Sync 3 Intuitive infotainment system from the new Fiesta, Floating 8-inch touchscreen that is hard to fault in terms of graphics as it’s of crisp stuff with capabilities to swipe control and pinch-to-zoom, Apple CarPlay/Android Auto , Bluetooth and two USB ports and a 12V power outlet.

Centre console features an armrest with integrated storage with added a retractable armrest with cupholders at the backseat, a full 5-star ANCAP safety rating, a Thatcham alarm system and electrochromic rear-view mirror, which darkens whenever a following vehicle shines its headlamps on it.

Navigation is as standard and a semi-digital instrumentation as well rear park distance control, keyless start/push to start button, climate and cruise control with speed limiter.

There’s 7 airbags , ABS (anti-Lock braking system) , ESC (Electronic Stability Control) ,EBA(electronic Brake assist) , RSC (Roll Stability Control) EPAS(Electric power-assist steering) , HLA (Hill Launch Assist) as well as ISOFIX anchor points.


Multifunctional steering wheel that is unmistakable Ford,the seats are leathery and heated with decent seating position and allowed legroom on the rear as a person cannot be ambitious and too strict for a car this size , there’s 333L Boot Space though.

Ford EcoSport is almost nippy like it’s cousin Ford Fiesta, However you still feel that you riding higher at 206mm from the ground, Good sound insulation plus suspension and steering that is in co-ordination tuned and can be moved up and down only and cannot be telescopically adjusted.

Prior to the expedition Ford South Africa initially asked me to choose a weekend adventure between the tourist attracting Table Mountain or the Historic heart of Cape Town Museum.


My choice was the latter being the worlds first heart transplant place performed by Beaufort West In the Karoo born Christiaan Neethling Barnard who was a South African cardiac surgeon who performed the world's first highly publicized heart transplant and the first one in which the patient regained consciousness.


I also made a stint visit and mini picnic to Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden which is acclaimed as one of the great botanic gardens of the world and rest against the eastern slopes of Cape Town’s Table Mountain.


Throughout the expedition the in -gear punch of the EcoSport felt healthier , easy to maneuver in town, It felt athletic and punchy slicing through busy streets as my weekend commute included lots of city driving,

Last year I did highway and out of town driving covering a distance of over 850Km’s and the EcoSport was always eager and not bothered by the highway crosswinds and uphills.

EcoSport doesn’t handle poorly at all ,the brakes have good bite, the ride absorbs bumps with ease and the independent front and torsion-beam rear suspension doesn’t lean much in corners.

Verdict:- one of the best seller in its class ensures good resale values, suitable for small families and those young at heart senior citizens, or just any consumer who want some fun at a budget, buy it.

it’s like buying the cake and eating it,everything is as standard on this Titanium derivative except choosing the Latte Mocha paintwork even though Ford officially Calls it Silk Metallic 
