I never liked BMWs....

On November 23, 2017

Maintenance Costs R 500.00 / Year

Insurance Premium Value R 2,000.00 / Month

Fuel Consumption 10 L/100km

I had never liked BMWs, I think it had to do with the hype around BMs in the community where I had grown up. I remember copious walks around bright yellow BMW M3s in the 90s. I faked being impressed just cos well... everybody was faking and deep, deep inside I said to myself... I would never buy a BMW.

I'm a very practical gal. I am in a flashy industry but I've always been just practical. So naturally I have always driven Toyotas. When the time approached to change the old faithful  2004 RAV4 ( a car I would recommend to starter families), I took an entire day off and decided to keep an open mind. To test drive cars across the motoring brands. I started with the Mazda CX3 : A great gift for an ex you hate. Then the Jeep Compass... as painfully sluggish as the president's address. I then tried the Mercedes??   Not a bad ride but a bit claustrophobic. Space is free, is it not? I wish Mercedes would register that in their latest designs . It was the end of the working day (5:05pm) and I felt that the entire motor industry had gone backwards. They had forgotten the basic needs  of the busy person who just wants a great easy ride. My daughter, who came with me for all the free coffee and biscuits dealerships offered,  suggested we go into the BMW dealership. That was like telling a Jew to go to mosque. "No" I bluntly replied. She then argued that things couldn't get worse and that we had nothing to loose. I drove in hoping nobody saw this sacrilegious act... especially my family who had been on the receiving end of my anti-beemer rants.

A very young salesman with brown bread crumbs on the sides of his mouth rushed to me. His first week on the job. They were closing but he offered to take me out. He drove and talked and the entire way... sunroof, diesel vs petrol , SOS facilities, run flats, blah blah blah blah. Then he said turned to me and said " you drive".

I rolled my eye and exchanged seats. I drove for 3 mins. That was it. I was converted.

I'm sure that I'm in the record for the fastest BMW sale ever. I said to the shocked youngster "I'm buying this very car or nothing".

I phoned the husband ( a formality of marriage) and said I found it.

The BMW X3 M Series is what I would call a modern classic. It grips the road like a 12 year old girl in a roller coaster ride. It has three settings of efficient, comfort and sport for different times of the month. Mmmh, let me clarify... budgetary speaking. It's spacious and classy without being flashy. It has height.
If I had to fault one thing it would be its cumbersome navigation system which requires you key in letters of the alphabet. But then I am also of the firm belief that the motor industry should leave navigation to the telecoms guys, they simply do it better. I'm still getting my head around run flats and the crocked pothole tenders. They are extremely uneasy bedfellows.

I have always loved manual drives but this absolute  beauty .. and beast has changed that as well.

The true test happens at my garage. We have a Disco 4 , a Hilux and the X3. Interestingly enough everyone who drives the X3 always comments on the excellent drive and it's not just a throwaway line, they share their experience in it. From my Mercedes loving father in law from Durbs to my Porsche driving brother in law from Dubai, you can see them light up.

It's the best decision I made and it's certainly my favourite child.

Just test drive it .... once.
Ok... then there is that small issue of the price
