The BMW X3 started life as a clunky, forgettable looking thing; it now cuts quite an athletic,
aggressive figure - especially when it’s fitted with the optional 21-inch wheels. The overall
impression is that this is a car that has the potential to deliver much more than just a regular
daily commute.

The M40i is fitted with a straight-six turbo petrol, which puts out 265kW and 500Nm; drive is to all
four wheels through an 8-speed automatic gearbox. It doesn’t too take much time with the M40i to
know that it feels a bit different to what you might expect in this kind of car. On startup, it dishes
out a superb noise, and on the move it’s impressively quick and delivers brilliant handling. It’s the
kind of setup that encourages you to push harder with each corner, and every time you do,
there’s more of the same impressive power and grip, complemented by steering that remains
accurate - even when loaded up.

The car’s 50 / 50 weight distribution helps with its overall balance, and the drivetrain has the ability
to shift 100% of the torque between either axle; it results in supreme confidence behind the wheel -
and no small amount of enjoyment. The M Sport braking system also copes well keeping the X3
under control, despite the car weighing in at 1800kg.

It’s also not bad on dirt - even with its 500Nm output. A standing start on loose gravel delivers zero
in the way of flashing traction control lights or bogging down. Instead, there’s lots of composure,
lots of grip with rapid forward progress and real confidence through the corners.

Overall, the ride setup is a good mix of sportiness and comfort; the only time you really experience
the downside of its performance edge is at lower speed, where the combination of its taughter
suspension and big wheels lets you know when you’re on rougher surfaces - but even then, it’s
easy to live with.

The interior of the X3 M40i is pleasant departure from BMW’s sometimes monochromatic,
more functional setups. Here there’s a mix of colours, textures, and even a bit of
personality. The cabin is a considered, well-crafted space. Quality plastics mix with
aluminium and the ergonomics are also good. It’s not short on tech either, with everything from
virtual instruments and keyless operation, to the optional BMW Connected Drive system
that offers live traffic and concierge services.

Interior space is useful, with a boot that can cram up to 1600 litres of cargo.

Never mind what the marketing says about the X3 being able to take you on an adventure,
the real talent of the M40i lies in its ability to deliver an (unexpected) entertaining drive. Far
from being just an SUV with a BMW badge, the X40M feels like a real BMW.
