Audi Southern Africa was running a competition on the introduction of the all new Audi Q5 and I took a chance submitted my entry form responding to how I define adventure and my most recent adventure, I was one of the lucky winners.

The prize was a weekend away in the new Audi Q5. To be honest I was expecting a normal Q5 and to my surprise, a black SQ5 rocked up ,with excitement I couldn’t tell whether it was Brilliant Black or Mythos Black.

The sheer presence of the car took my attention the moment it pulled up in my drive way, From that very moment I realized that Audi is full of surprises, I could not believe that I was actually in possession of a 260 kW machine from Ingolstadt, Matador Red SQ5 my Ultimate weekend thrill.

I made sure I that threw in my bags into its 550 Litre boot space (1,550-litres when rear seats laid down flat with 40:20:40 split) almost as quickly as 5.4s well that’s the car's claimed print to 100km/h from standstill. This is a bit of a departure from the previous generation SQ5 that was offered in diesel only in our shores.


It's now powered by a 3.0 TFSI V6 petrol engine same engine found in S4 and S5 siblings. This engine makes all sorts of pops and cracks on gearshift which in turn sends naughty smile signals to a petrol head


My route was already pre-planned, and I took the scenic Clarence Drive Route 44, passing Gordon’s Bay ,Pringle Bay ,Rooi Els, Bettiesbay and Kleinmond.

But how does it drive you wonder? With permanent quattro (unlike the Q5 with quattro-on demand for efficiency) , the SQ5 is planted to the tarmac with zero wheel spin, Inclines are taken with less effort because 500Nm of overtaking Torque available, I was cruising on comfort mode but by default I engaged Dynamic Mode which is basically Sport mode when you kind of late for the school run to pick up the kids.


I kid you not, when you are in Dynamic Mode, an animal gets unleashed,The 8 speed Tiptronic gearbox ensures a smooth gearshift but you will feel being shoved pushed behind as if you propelled by Cape gale force winds when you are in Dynamic Mode as you add tad more acceleration.


I had to constantly remind myself that I’m in a public road and jail speeds are easily achievable here, and it would be disrespectful and dangerous to fellow road users if I did what is reserved for the controlled track conditions on public roads.

Inside the SQ5 it’s fitted with crisp 12-inch screen Virtual Cockpit with navigation which made finding my destination Grootbos Private Nature Reserve Gansbaai with ease. Built quality is unmistakable Audi and demonstrates greatness in every detail all thanks to Audi Exclusive interventions .

Competitively priced with the German rivals in the form of Porsche Macan S ,BMW X3 M40i and Mercedes-Benz GLC43 AMG.

My weekend SQ5 came with an optional glass panoramic roof that covers most of the roof, making sure you get all the light and views of the sky you need to connect with mother nature. You can close the panoramic roof with a curtain close if the sun becomes too much, at just a press of a button.



Exterior mirrors are electrically adjustable, heated and fold electrically, Anodised roof rails come standard and so as powered seats,If you want them to remember your last seating position and automatically adjust accordingly, that comes at a price (best option if you sharing the car with the family members or better half ), also Towing equipment with trailer stability.

Other optional features include matrix LED headlights with dynamic turn signals, Virtual Cockpit with MMI Navigation , Bang and Olufsen Stereo, just to name few out of Plethora of safety features there was City assistance Package inclusive of predictive efficiency assistant technology that uses the route data to alert the driver about situations in which it is advisable to slow down.


The system can detect curves, traffic circles and intersections, inclines and descents, town speed limits and speed limit signs before they become visible and so by alert the driver and can even apply brakes.


There was brushed aluminium dashboard inlays, door sill trims with aluminium inlays, illuminated S rhombus emblem and a sport contour leather steering wheel with a 3-spoke design.

The craftsmanship is impressive in the SQ5, The gear lever selector made me think I was flying some special Lufthansa bird every time I touched it to select drive,sport or engage reverse. What amused me is how by just pressing the park button, everything just neutralizes without having to physically select to parking gear mode.

Key words, being Sports Utility Vehicle, I kid you not, this is not just a pretty face, With proper ground clearance and quattro on demand, you can really get close to where adventure lies ,this was tested by close to the beach dirt drives,however minding those AudiSport Cast Alloy Mags and low profile rubber.

Yes, you can’t really go extreme off-roading as this is no by any means a 4x4, and the vehicle is not designed for such, Whilst at it, the 360-degree radar will ensure that you won’t scrape your expensive paintwork or bumper as the car will tell you and warn you when you get too close to an obstacle.


Verdict:- If you want a sporty performance in an SUV format , the SQ5 will give you that, Similarly if you want versatility, this Audi seem to cater such
Inclusive of expeditions with the family,it’s a poised And athletic SUV that loves open roads.

Comfortable ride with good quality and a throaty power station, with sleek and modern cabin and a welcoming place to be, potent with its balance act assurance of Quattro system that is rear bias with 40/60 front-to-rear torque allocation and can send as much as 85 percent of the torque to the rear.
