Blast Through the Twisty Tarmac in Audi S3

On November 1, 2019

Maintenance Costs R 0.00 / Year

Insurance Premium Value R 0.00 / Month

Fuel Consumption L/100km

With roughly week left before the start of Pioneer Rally, in this Rally celebrities and visually impaired navigators from the Pioneer School established in 1881 are paired in teams, rally starts at Audi Centre Somerset West where each team receives an Audi for the day.

The celebrities are dependent on the braille route cards deciphered by their visually impaired navigator, the teams have to arrive on time at the Golden Valley Casino in Worcester which is just over 100 kilometers from Somerset West.

The blind navigators use Braille route schedules and partially-sighted navigators make use of large print schedules to direct their drivers on where to go and at what speed to travel.

The main aim of the Rally is to create awareness around visual impairment and to raise money through gala prize-giving and fundraising dinner , the money raised through the event is put to good use at the school, including upgrading facilities, and extending financial help to families.

Having been good friends with Audi Centre Somerset dealership for years i attended the event last year, there was a plethora of Audi cars, I was tasked to return with a car and courier it back to the dealership, perfect arrangements to test this unit as I never got it on my testing garage.

There were two choices, drive under the tunnel on N1 towards CapeTown or opt for Twistie road Du Toitskloof, ninenteen kilometer mountain pass route bypassing the tunnel,as you guessed it I opted for the latter, but what is this car I was tasked to pilot you wonder :-

The car sits between the normal A3 hatchback and the top in the range RS3 range, powered by Award winning Volkswagen Group 2.0L turbocharged engine mated to seven speed S-Tronic gear box and quattro/ all wheel drive with sports tuned suspension.

With Volkswagen Group behind it, this benefits from robust engineering and cutting-edge safety equipment all around, available in Sportback, Sedan and drop top derivatives, this is 25mm lower than the standard A3 derivatives.

It’s the facelifted S3 Sportback In Tango Red , power is hiked from 210KW to full fat 228KW/400NM ,a step further as the S3 8V type initially came with 206KW in our shores when is made its debut, but later topped to 210KW.

Easy way to differentiate the S3 to the S-line trimmed A3, is in the form of that unique single-frame grille aluminium-look finish and matt platinum grey inserts, with either black or red brake calipers, as well as red Rhombus “S”3 badge on grille and at the tailgate.

However the test unit I was driving was draped in optional Titanium Black Appearance package by Audi Exclusive, however the mirror casings are still capped at being silver than black styled to complement the grille, however still a cool looking setup.

A standard double spoke AudiSport eighteenth inch Mags and brake calipers painted red at a fee and with “S” markings, ensured the road contact and stopping the machine from Ingolstadt.

The front bumper features black look double ribs worked into the air inlets, the rear bumper incorporates a black rear diffuser that houses the quad exhausts with chrome-tipped oval tailpipes and modest sporty roof spoiler/wing.

There is LED headlights with separate LED daylight running lights aswell as poor weather cornering lights and dynamic turning LED signals at the rear, Scuff plates with aluminum inserts in front, illuminated, with "S" logo.

The cabin is well built and unmistakable Audi thanks to high quality materials with decorative inserts in Matte Brushed Aluminum and excellent design.

There’s that brilliant crisp 12.3-inch driver oriented digital virtual cockpit that provides everything from vehicle speed to navigation functions, this car also had the sun inviting optional panoramic roof.

Well executed interior quality, complete with flat-bottomed three spoke multifunctional steering wheel, beautifully grippy, massively comfortable leather sports seats In optional fine Nappa leather and four way lumbar supported.

A good place to be, the steering wheel can be racked in and out at your desired driving position with decent driving ergonomics, with jet engine style rotary air vents.

Connectivity in the form of Audi MMI radio with Optional MMI navigation plus with MMI Touch and Audi smartphone interface , Apple car play and Android Auto, Park distance control ,rear view camera , adaptive cruise control, high beam assist and Loud Bang and Olufsen stereo to name some of the added extras.

But how does it drive?
The S3 Sportback snarls, pops, and rumbles a perfect symphony of performance motoring,
the handling is precise and very secure all thanks to that AWD system , the S3 picks up speed very briskly , Incredibly competent, deceptively fast.

In winding tarmac that’s where the quattro comes alive and inspire confidence, it handles like a locomotive on rails , where my front wheel drive car could experience an element of tyre screech, the S3 just sits and sticks with tremendous quattro AWD grip.

Verdict:- The S3 might be towards the end of its life cycle however it’s still one of the competent perfomance hatch to buy if you on that performance hatch market, seriously poised with agile chassis and practical as family car for daily commutes .
