A Stint in new Audi Q8

On September 5, 2019

Maintenance Costs R 0.00 / Year

Insurance Premium Value R 0.00 / Month

Fuel Consumption L/100km

It’s an SUV crazy world, 4,986 millimeters long, 1,995 millimeters wide and 1,705 millimeters high, The Q8 sits lower than it’s bigger sister Q7 to create a sporty look, riding on same MLB Evo Volkswagen Group Platform with its Siblings Lamborghini Urus,Bentley Bentayga,Porsche Cayenne Coupe and Volkswagen Touareg, the Q8 is actually built In Volkswagen Group Factory Bratislava Slovakia with Q7 and Touareg.

With a wheelbase of almost three meters the Audi Q8 offers adequate space for five people,
The seats are excellent front and rear, there’s tons of space in the back and a decent boot
with ample legroom ,605 liters of boot space to be specific which increases to 1,755 liters with the rear backrests folded down.

With the imposing Singleframe in octagonal design, similar design was first saw in Audi A8,this is the new design language under Marc Lichte the Chief whip of the exterior and Interior design, however the A8 embodies elegance, sophistication and progressive status.

The Audi Q8 in turn with its octagonal radiator grille denotes the Flagship Of Audi Q Range, distinctively shaped contours above the wheel arches give salute to the Audi Ur-quattro Of the eighties ,first Audi Model to wear quattro/all wheel drive DNA, wheel arches can accommodate up to 22-inch wheels.

Q8 feature a full-length light strip at the rear, that’s also have been found in A7 and A8, Audi calls this light in motion, Individual light sequencing on the front HD Matrix LED headlights and the rear lights highlights the model’s particular character when opening and closing the vehicle.

On the inside its new digital world, with the new MMI touch response operating feature , nearly every function can be accessed via two large displays, The upper 10.1-inch display is used for controlling the infotainment and the navigation system. The driver uses the 8.6-inch display below that for heating and air conditioning.

The tactile/acoustic feedback of the screens serves as confirmation of a a touch input have went through, you still get the high resolution 12.3-inch
Audi virtual cockpit with the online voice control system understands natural voice commands and can be activated via a steering wheel.

The head-up display projects important information onto the windshield, including detailed lane guidance for navigation and speed , the cabin remains an incredibly one the best environment to be seated in, with noise, vibration, and harshness levels remarkably sound proofed.

But how does it drive:-? progressive steering with variable steering ratio felt direct with ample feedback and not all over the place for a car this bold in Twisty Winery Routes Of Somerset west, solid sound proof cabin unless you decide to start the party in transit with the Advanced Bang & Olufsen sound system.

On Request you can get the air suspension that ensures the road is soaked further than the already good standard suspension ride quality, the air suspension also raise the body 50mm for off-road expeditions and drops the body for dynamic driving.

You also get the dynamic all wheel steering , in this format the rear-axle steering turns the wheels by up to 5 degrees in the opposite direction at speeds up to 60 km/h thus reducing the turning circle by up to 1.1 meters , Above 60 km/h it steers in the same direction as the front wheels, thus improving straight-line and twisty road stability.

The 55TFSI (3 Litre V6 250KW/500NM if you still have not got the grip new Audi badge naming nomenclature) This Engine is not lazy at all mated to the 8 speed tiptronic auto box.

even though you won’t really get the rush you would expect in let’s say RSQ8 and that lives a room for Audi Sport to intervene and that’s coming in Audi RS Range! However don’t get me wrong Audi Q8 is rapid, comfy cruiser with a surprising ability to navigate through corners very well with ease even though you riding tad far from the ground.

Verdict:- Audi Might not have started this SUV-Coupe phenomenon however they took it to the next level and sent the competitors back to the drawing board! In my opinion This is one of the best Looking SUV-Coupe your money can buy at the market at the moment!

It’s Stylish ,sophisticated ,bold, clever, aggressive ,big, technological injected and more practical and useful, with coupe statement making pillars-less doors unique in this segment and something appealing to stare at!

Highly customizable if you consult the stylish people of Audi Exclusive works and not shy to “tick” the option list, however thread with caution as it’s easy to break the bank with option list.

The flagship Audi Q8 also known as the 8th Dimension . Audi finally joined the SUV Coupe segment by bringing out this car which is basically a direct competitor to the BMW X6 & GLE Coupe . They have entered this market in a very brave manner and to be honest at the right time . It was a bold move to actually bring this car to production but I can gladly say that it was one of their best moves this year . Some cars people need to be told the name for them to know the car but with this one you can gladly spot it from a far that it's an Audi Q8 and there's no need for you to be told about it .

This is the 55TFSI which comes with a 3.0L V6 engine producing 250kW . That's quite some power you have under the bonnet right there . Although this is quite a big car but trust me when I say that you don't even feel the size for the car when driving reason being the drive is so smooth and even better if you opt for the one that comes with the Air Suspension . Another thing that makes this car so wonderful to drive and not feel the size of the car besides how light the steering wheel is , it's the rear wheel steering which actually makes this cars' turning circle practically the same as an Audi A3 . The Gearbox isn't the best out there but it gets the job done pretty well none the less . One thing I noticed is when flooring it on manual Mood the car will always upshift the first gear for you which can be irritating but you get used to it over time . Everything else concerning the drive is just amazing .

Coming inside the cabin for the car , this can easily be class leading when it comes to practically . Although its a coupe there's quite a lot of head room in the back and not to mention the leg room , feels like you could easily be seating in an A8L but just higher . In front there's too much space even the tallest people can easily get in and adjust their seat and not even make the people at the back feel uncomfortable . The media system in the car is amazing the car has three screens . Yeah I know you most probably asking yourself how , let me elaborate . The first screen is the Virtual cockpit where it shows your speed and everything else about the car . The second one is the one where you normally expect which is the one where you control your music , navigation etc. The one you wouldn't expect is the one below the media screen which is for your climate control as well as you can write on it if you setting a destination for navigation .
One problem the interior will easily have to be the finger prints that will be left behind because of all the touch screen .

This is indeed Audi's Flagship vehicle . one of my favorite features is how the lights dance when unlocking and locking the car . With that being said , my honest opinion is Audi Q8 has to be class leading in its segment but we will just have to wait and see how the market views this statement .

The All New Audi Q8

This ladies and gents, is the all new Audi Q8. Beautiful right ? This is Audi’s new flagship model, which comprises of luxury and off road capabilities all in one.
At launch, the Q8 was only available in South Africa with the 55 TFSI engine variant, however a diesel powered 45 TDI engine joined the line up in August 2019. Starting at R1 388 000, the 55 TSFI features a turbocharged 3.0-litre V6, producing 250kW and 500Nm to all four wheels via an eight-speed automatic transmission. This results in an acceleration from standstill to 100km/h in 5.9 seconds. The 45 TDI however produces 183kW and 600 Nm from the very same 3.0-litre engine, resulting in a 0-100km/h time of 7 seconds flat. This variant will start from R1 439 000 in South Africa.
To my understanding, the new Q8 will include many features as standard, namely, it will most likely sit on 20-inch wheels ( with an option to upgrade to 21 & 22 inches ), Matrix LED’s also included along with Audi’s virtual cockpit, a panoramic glass sunroof and power front seats which include heating too. Four zone air-conditioning, power adjustable steering column, full leather upholstery and lastly, a Bang & Olufsen sound system, are also features to be standard on this Q8.
In addition, Audi will also introduce three S-Line packages. South Africans will be able to choose between a S Line Black Package ( S Line Exterior; high gloss black package; exterior mirror in black; black roof rails; 22-inch wheels; adaptive air suspension; red brake callipers ) ; the S Line Platinum Package ( S Line exterior; single frame mask in platinum grey; 22-inch wheels; adaptive air suspension & red brake callipers ) ; or the S Line Sports Interior Package ( 4-way lumbar support for the front seats; sport adaptive air suspension; decorative inserts in matte brushed aluminium; headliner in black; pedals and footrests in stainless steel; S Line logos on exterior; front and rear scuff plates in aluminium with illuminated S logo; front sport seats & lastly, stainless steel load edge protection.
This then, is one serious bit of tech, dashed with luxury, sportiness and most definitely off road capabilities. The Q8 definitely has my stamp of approval.

Sitting in flagship throne on the Q- Range , it’s wider, lower and shorter than its sibling Q7, with its mandate deliver with greater on-road presence with its squats , more than its 7 seater sibling.

it’s a new model In the segment that BMW have started with their X6 range in 2008 followed by Mercedes-Benz with their GLE Coupe Range, this is four pillar-less door, five-seater with sporty coupe styling and big wheel arches that can house up to 22 inch wheel size.

The Q8 comes in either Diesel which is 45 TDI quattro tiptronic (3.0 -litre turbocharged diesel motor with 183 kW and 600 Nm) or Petrol Engine which is 55 TFSI (3.0-litre twin-turbo petrol V6 producing 250kW of power and 500Nm of torque) mated to 8 speed quattro tiptronic gearbox, the latter was the one delivered to me in Carrara white paintwork.

In its normality the car comes with twenty inch alloys, my unit was in optional twenty two inch Audi Sport Cast alloy wheels which can be purchased individually or as a package, the package also paints the brake calipers red.

In this case the mags came with S -Line Sports Package as well as Gloss Black Package that deletes single frame mask in Matte Platinum Grey and transforms it to all black nose creating a beautiful Panda effect in appeal.

The Headlights comes as standard with High Definition Matrix LED’s with dynamic lightning and turn signal, it’s lights festival in front when closing or opening the unit, with the strip of light bar at the rear that does magic dance in lights .

The large Panoramic Roof , MMI Navigation Plus with 10.1inch touch infotainment screen with haptic touch response( with support for Apple CarPlay and Android Auto) and the 1920x720 pixels 12.3 Inch Virtual cockpit Plus.

On the Centre dash there’s also 8.6 inch display touch screen for temperature selection and can also be used to intelligent search for navigation address with word scribbling functionality on the screen.

This all comes as standard and those are some of the equipment that adds value for money to this unit compared to the some rivals that you would have been expected to pay for such luxury.

My unit loaded with options and packages of just under 300k, the likes of Night Vision assist, Heads up display, all wheel steering, automated towbar, adaptive cruise control and Lane departure warning.

Lane change assist with pre-sense rear which was tested when the car guard jump into the rear trying to guide the Q8, the Q8 simple picked up that sequel and aggressively applied brakes, the steering wheel can be electrically adjusted with also seatbelt tensioning witchcraft when the car departs.

There was standard 360 degrees 3D projection camera, you can actually see infront and back and all around, that came in handy in confined spaces trying to safely steer this ship from Ingolstadt as a well as front and back Park distance control as Standard.

There is also tri-zone climate control with the rear passengers able to individually fine tune their air whether hot or cold, by digital touch capabilities on the rear center console.

The Q8 is equipped with the 48 Volt Mild Hybrid technology that is found across the some Audi range, it’s mandate is for better fuel efficiency by letting the car coast to as stop and recouping that energy and redistribute it along the system.

The Mild Hybrid set up is functional as I was reading a fuel figure of 6.5L/ 100km at some point on the highway, which is remarkable for a Petrol powered SUV Coupe this size and road presence.

It literally warns you to take off your feet from the accelerator for that process to complete, the Mild Hybrid technology also assists in eliminating the elements of a turbo lag during acceleration and providing instant power.

Consumers who buys SUV’s are looking for space, there’s plenty of leg room, with 605L boot space and up to 1,755 liters with rear seats folded in 40:20:40 format ,the Bench can also slide forward by 10 centimeters ,there’s more than 14Liters in pocket space capacity .

But how does it drives:- with the car equipped with optional adaptive air sport suspension and all wheel steering that makes the rear wheels turn accordingly, for turning, the back wheels turn to the opposite direction to the front’s and thus reducing the turning circle.

At speeds over 60km/h and in twisty tarmac, rear wheels turn with the front’s and creates better balanced car and this ship does handles impressively well for a car this size with the freedom of 40:60 configuration quattro system.

Dynamically the Q8 is impressive and it deals with its dimensions and mass with aplomb, the ride quality is firm, but far from uncomfortable, choose the Comfort mode and you feel the air suspension ride soaking up the bumpy tarmac.

The car is equipped with hill descend assist button which acts as off-road cruise control, and also off-road profile with instruments that can measure the angle of tilt and where the wheels are pointing.

You can extensively off-road if you brave but I suggest you choose different profile when adventuring a lot, the 22 inch low profile won’t be recommended by me for extended dirt driving, rather keep them at standard 20’s, however you will miss out on the boss look of the 22’s.

Verdict:- Ingolstadt based company may have entered this segment later than its German Counterparts from Munich and Stuttgart, however they came with something rather desirable and head turning in its class.

They prioritized on offering more space and head room that some Coupe-SUV lacks, they loaded the car with tried and tested Volkswagen group MQB MLB-Evo Architecture , technology and quattro DNA, results are a capable performing SUV, best of both worlds.

One of the best SUV-Coupe cars in the market with handling dynamics of a hatchback, my most overall favorite SUV I’ve tested in 2019,I want one so bad.
