The Alfa Romeo Stelvio starts out with a very big plus - it’s based on the same chassis as the very drivable Giulia. At the very least, that promises some dynamic driving enjoyment, which is not something you usually associate with an SUV. On top of that, its size has done nothing to blunt Alfa Romeo’s attractive styling. The face makes it recognisable as a new generation Alfa Romeo, and it has similar lines and details to the Giulia. On the inside, the safety tech includes collision avoidance, pedestrian detection and adaptive cruise control. The design and layout is top class, but some materials, like the gloss black plastic on the dashboard and centre console can feel a little less than premium.

Space all round is good; head and leg room in the back will keep rear passengers happy
and the boot space is on par with anything else in its class.

The 2.0 turbo petrol motor puts out 206kW and 400Nm, delivered in a very smooth and satisfying way; it’s a punchy, responsive thing that builds up speed almost effortlessly. The 8-speed automatic gearbox - the only choice across the range - is docile but effective when cruising, but when you start pressing on, it gets a little more involving by providing a little kick on downshifts.

The ride setup provides a combination of 50:50 weight distribution and a rear-based all-wheel drive setup that delivers superb handling that builds confidence; overall, it’s a car that is easy to get to grips with quickly, and easy have a lot of fun with.

As if to underscore its sporty driving credentials, the Stelvio has built in some typical sportscar shortcomings. The view out the back isn’t the most panoramic, and an upright driving position will have your elbows will be jamming into the seat bolsters through tighter corners.

The Stelvio is obviously an SUV, but it still manages to deliver on Alfa Romeo’s promise of delivering an involving drive thanks to a combination of satisfying power, a good gearbox, and a talented ride setup.

With its premium interior and good looks, it’s a package that can compete very well with the its market rivals.
