Mercedes-Benz CLA and A-Class Sedan – What’s The Deal?
Mercedes-Benz South Africa launched the all-new CLA and A-Class Sedan today. This is the first time we see the A-Class Sedan on home soil, while the CLA filled the gap for a small four-door ‘sedan’ previously which leads us to ask the following question: why do we need both of these models?
Well, the short answer is different markets. The CLA targets younger owners that want something that looks sporty but is still practical, while the A-Class Sedan is focused on offering traditional sedan practicality. The biggest sign of this clear divergence of purpose is in the rear. The roofline of the CLA flows smoothly into the boot, creating a sporty silhouette in exchange for a bit less rear headroom while the A-Class Sedan keeps the sedan shape, offering the best rear headroom and boot capacity.
“With the first CLA we had created a totally new segment with a four-door coupé and celebrated huge sales success by selling 750 000 CLA’s globally,” says Johannes Fritz, Co-CEO of Mercedes-Benz South Africa and Executive Director Mercedes-Benz Cars. “The new edition of the CLA has been developed further in an intelligent way and is even more emotional and sportier than its predecessor. Coupled with new operating systems, it sets new benchmarks for the entire class.”
While Selvin Govender, Marketing Director for Mercedes-Benz Cars South Africa, says: "The 2019 COTY winning A-Class Hatch continues to grow from strength to strength. The A-Class Hatch, launched late in 2018 has been joined in 2019 by the new B-Class, the new CLA and now the new A-Class Sedan. This is in response to the wishes of many customers that require a compact sedan for small families… The introduction of the A-Class Sedan enables the brand an opportunity to target different audience segments.”
