Launch: BMW Motorrad R1250 Road Bikes by Thomas Bohm
Barnstorming refers to light aircraft pilots using barns as hangers at impromptu air shows during the 1920’s in America. Although BMW has a strong history in building aircraft engines, those stunt pilots might not have used BMW engines then, but they would have loved the latest liquid cooled incarnation of the venerable boxer engine that has grown in capacity to 1254 cc, utilizing the latest shift-cam technology that gives massive low speed torque, but also offers white knuckle performance at illegal speeds offering maximum torque of 143 Nm.

The naked roadster looked sporty with the optional Style HP colours. This perfectly showcases the engines brazen nature and the refinements in the gearbox. It now has a smooth action 2-way quick shifter enabling the rider to surf the torque curve, effortlessly. I found the bike huge fun to flick through the endless slalom bends on route to Kaapsehoop. Brakes, suspension and handling are all top class although I initially worried about wind protection on the faster sections, but alas BMW Motorrad have somehow created a TFT screen that offers more wind protection than most. The 6.5-inch TFT display is one of the best in the business, clear and easy to read and used in conjunction with the handlebar mounted multi controller wheel also offers great connectivity to mobile devices and your music playlist. Download the BMW Motorrad connected app on your phone for navigation, speed limits, fuel range and a host of other features including a Sport Core Screen with a large rev counter, braking level and lean angle indicator. A very innovative feature for those long trips.
