McLaren 620R

It looks like Christmas has come early courtesy of the ladies and gentlemen of McLaren. The gift? An all-new McLaren called the 620R. The McLaren 620R is a much more hardcore version of the McLaren 570S, which already proved to be scary enough in its McLaren 600LT derivative. Let’s take a look at McLaren’s latest road legal track weapon.

The look of the McLaren 620R is inspired by the track-exclusive 570S GT4 which perfectly sums up what this car really is – a road legal GT4 car. McLaren describes the 620R as the "most track-focused, track-ready but roadgoing McLaren Sports Series model." The wing, aerodynamic upgrades, lightweight carbon fibre monocoque and other bits all contribute to make the 620R a worthy rival either on the road or track.

The engine has been tuned up to match the menacing looks of the McLaren 620R. The twin-turbocharged 3.8-litre V8 from the 570S GT4 is found at the heart of the 620R, albeit with a lot more power. Since there aren’t many racing regulations to follow, the engine could be maximised to its full potential, enabling a maximum of 455kW of power and 620Nm of torque to be produced by the engine. This is sent through a seven-speed Seamless Shift Gearbox allowing the McLaren 620R to accelerate from 0-100km/h in 2.9-seconds, although 0-100km/h figures don’t really matter anymore these days. So McLaren has revealed the 0-200km/h time of 8.1-seconds, which is equally as impressive as its top speed of 322km/h.

The 620R will be available in a selection of different colourways inspired by the 570S, such as McLaren Orange with white racing stripes, Silica White with orange stripes and Onyx Black with orange stripes. If these aren’t exciting enough then you’ll be happy to know that additional colours are available through MSO. You will have to move fast if you want one, though, because McLaren will only be producing 350 units of the McLaren 620R with production commencing in January next year. You can also expect to pay a premium over the price of the McLaren 600LT.
