Best Handling Drivers Car For The Price?

On October 25, 2018

Maintenance Costs R 4,000.00 / Year

Insurance Premium Value R 2,000.00 / Month

Fuel Consumption 8 L/100km

I've owned mine for 2 years, and have had many experiences with it, from trips to J bay to smaller trips to the local PicknPay, it's really a fun and involving car to drive. The car makes you work for performance of the 2.0L, which is one downfall, but also its clear that it wasn't made for the "racer" and more for the "purist", The fuel economy isn't bad but isn't good either, I got 6.4L/100km highway driving and an average of say 9L/100km urban driving. The Toyota 86 teaches a lot, from fast cornering, to sideways fun, its really the basics of how car enthusiasts began their appreciation. Its perfect for a Sunday drive or a winding mountainous road at 4 AM.

Downfalls? Most definitely needs an exhaust its very quiet but that's my personal opinion, people might call it a Ferrari because of the looks, and every single time you stop at a traffic light there will be someone who wants to race you. And there's definitely no space for adults in the back seats, however with the back seats down if your persistent enough you can fit one large bag and a carry on if you want.

What will you experience on your first drive? how responsive the engine is (naturally aspirated), and how engaged you feel when changing gears, the good amount of grip it gives turning corners and the confidence inspiring feel of all those combined.

Standard 86 or High Spec are not much different, some creature comforts, like leather/Alcantara seats, heated seats, different dash cluster, 17" Rims, Daytime running lights, keyless entry, 100mm larger breaks up front are found in the high spec, yet its R100,000 more than the standard spec.

For the enthusiasts, The 86 has a lot of tunability, as probably seen on social media platforms, there's an infinite way of altering, improving, removing, customizing etc. But what they don't tell you is how expensive it is for the importation for those parts are. There's a hand full of shops in SA that have aftermarket parts for the 86 most are quite expensive but their very much value for money. To beat that very annoying "its slow" argument that people pull, there are turbo kits and supercharger kits which are the mainstream, but it is possible to keep it naturally aspirated and quicker than your mates Focus ST with a good tune and some extra performance pieces and changes. The availability of cosmetic parts has increased over the years the cars been in SA, so it's not impossible to find spoilers, lips, front lips, kits and such.

So is it worth it? If you don't care about instant speed, Yes(of course you can make it faster). Very much so Yes, if you enjoy pure driving dynamics of a naturally aspirated boxter, with a low center of gravity, stellar steering feedback, slightly tail happy engaging sports coupe. its a definite Yes.
