The Suzuki Vitara has been around for over 30 years, and in that time, the styling has moved from utilitarian to stylish - the latest version’s two tone roof is just example of its more upmarket appeal. The only real carryover from the old Vitara can be seen in the profile, which is still more squared off than sleek. Its most attractive end is at the front, where the grille and headlights create a strong look, with the GLS featuring LED running lights and chrome grille as standard.

The inside of the new VItara is a huge step up over the previous generation. Besides the standard kit, which includes Bluetooth and USB, the design is now bang up to date and a very nice place in which to spend some time. The GLS spec includes a panoramic roof, cruise control and steering wheel controls.

Space is decent, and a split-level boot means some extra convenience; it also has more space than both the similarly-priced Renault Captur and Opel Mokka.

The Vitara GLS is powered by a 1.6 naturally aspirated petrol motor, with a choice of 6-speed auto or 5-speed manual. The motor delivers decent mid-range punch, although there’s no doubt it’ll feel a power loss at higher altitudes. The gearing of the manual can feel a little long if you don’t keep things in the power band, but once you’re up and running, its 86kW and 151Nm feel good enough.

The chassis’ ability outdoes what the engine can deliver, and it does it with such ease that you find yourself pushing the Vitara without even thinking about it. And while it’s delivering the sure footed drive, it keeps things comfortable and under control. There’s very little in terms of steering feel, but overall, the ride setup is impressive - even on dirt. With decent clearances and Suzuki’s experience in building competent off-road machines, the Vitara gives you a general sense that it can ope well with challenging dirt. All-wheel drive versions feature the AllGrip system, which is able to transfer power between the front and rear axles according to the grip demands.
