For this class of a vehicle ,it is suitable to ferry large families or a bunch of friends for a road trip far away from home, you will need efficiency in consumption ,that’s where the diesel powered V-Class comes in.


Four years after the V-Class first went on sale, Mercedes is turning things a notch up with mid-life facelift, subtle changes.

I spent a day with Mercedes-Benz South Africa to sample a subtle face-lifted V Class which is only offered in OM651 Diesel engines tuned as follows :- V200d(100KW/330NM) V220d(120KW/380NM) and lastly V250d(140KW/440NM) ) in our market.


Forget about the 176KW/500NM V300d as Mercedes-Benz South Africa got no plans to introduce it in our market ,for now atleast , on launch all the passengers V Busses were in V250d format.






The changes are more of appearance changes than engine replacement and drivetrain works, V-Class measures an excess 5m, It’s 1.8m high and 2.2m wide.




Quite intimidating when outside but surprisingly easy to get along with on the inside and you have minders all around should you be not sure still, in the form of 360 degrees camera and front to back Park distance control.



Jump in the passenger or drivers seat and you are greeted with with a floating seven inch display, with that Merc iPad style like configuration, being my first time engaging with the V Class.



I had to constantly look for a gear lever which doesn’t exist, you get indicator like stick shifter to engage drive mode and the automated gearbox takes care of the rest after that.


There’s space for six personnel at the back should you wish, meaning you can comfortably fit seven passengers , the armrests fitted seat can be re-arranged to face either direction even though that requires manual labor as the seats are heavy as you have to carefully re-align the whole thing should you derail.

It’s quite a mission to get it right and you might need a person to assist as the seats are heavy, The seats slide and recline, and can even be removed completely if you have something huge to carry up
5,010 litres of space is available.


There is a pop up picnic table to work on or eat or eat something while on the go

The front seats are heated and you can opt for luxury seats that recline with back massage function at a fee of-course ,three zone climate heat /cold air control channelled via turbine like air vents .



Updated upholstery and equipment colors, streamlined cockpit, there’s many ways to customize how you want your bus to look on the interior inclusive an AMG-line/pack.

Up to Thirteen safety systems in the form of electronic stability control , Attention Assist/drowsiness detection system,lane-keeping assist , traffic sign recognition, Active Brake assist,High Beam Plus , Crosswind assist and Distronic Plus active radar cruise control to mention the few.


I just realized that I haven’t told you what are the tweaks that have happen on the outside, let’s get right into it! There’s new Bumpers with new Cooling air inlets ,new range of alloys updated trim, broader appearance.




Bigger grille, with an option to get the snazzy Diamond Grille similar to other Mercedes-Benz Models, Standard Lines,Avant-garde and AMG Lines.


Chuck this bus into twisty tarmac and it feels more direct, the driving suspension quality is very good and soak the bumpy terrain and speed humps with great composure , The steering is weighted and more precise.

One thing I’m not fond of is those Halogen Headlights available at a lower specced V-Classes, you have to go tad upper to experience beauty and fresh lightning of the LED’s.


The Halogens makes the Bus looks dated already and they don’t resonate with what Mercedes-Benz stands for when it comes to class,Hey Mercedes-Benz please scrape the Halogens on the New V Class Please when it’s time to turns up the notch again!


In closing the V-Class still carries on with that tradition of being a family bus, one to take on a road trip with friends.


if it’s black and tinted it turns to strongly appeal to Dignitaries,Heads of States,VIP’s Royal Families, it’s a classy cool looking bus ,the one to include on a convoy to Durban July, more desirable now with those tweaks and bits!

Yes, I said S-class estate. This is a proper bit of kit! Same leather quality & feel as in the S-class with a lot more room. Just wish we can get it in a 6-cylinder diesel model. (Yes I know that will bump up the price), but with that level of refinement, the 4-cylinder doesn’t suit the ambience.
