I took delivery of the ix35 as a work vehicle and didn't expect much. The interior was plasticky and the styling not to my taste. Initially, I did not want to like the car. However, after around 150,000km without a single glitch I am forced to admit that Hyundai did a decent job on the ix35.

As an entry-level model, the Active was fairly basic compared to its up-spec brethren and felt like a cheap hatchback on the inside. The kids didn't like the absence of A/C vents in the rear and felt as though they were sitting low in the car, which didn't help little tummies on twisty roads.

The engine didn't promise much on paper, but in practice I found the 2.0 litre petrol to be perfectly sufficient. Sure, it's no ball of fire and didn't have the torque I expected, but as long as you're not used to powerful cars it's fine. Six speed auto was smooth and always found the right ratio. Fuel economy averaged about 9.5 L/100 in a mixture of light urban driving and a best of 7.4 l/100km on the highway.

It's no sports car, but handling and braking were safe and adequate with the usual understeer and a slightly squishy brake pedal. It soaks up large bumps easily and felt confident on gravel roads. Noise is fairly well damped, but the engine got intrusive under load. The audio system was unremarkable but the radio got good reception in regional areas. Tyres (225/60R17 on steel wheels) lasted 90,000km and brakes were yet to be changed when I got rid of the car at about 150,000, making it cheap to run for its type.

I found the seats well suited to my body type on long trips. All up, the ix35 is a bit of a yawn, but will do everything the average driver will require of it dat-in day-out without anything falling off or giving undue concern. I should also point out that the customer service received when I had the car serviced was always excellent.
